David Volz

David L. Volz, 61, of Nashville, Ill., born Nov. 24, 1950, in Highland, Ill., died Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Washington County Hospital, Nashville, Ill.

Mr. Volz grew up in Alhambra, Ill., graduating from Highland High School in 1968. He earned his bachelor's degree in journalism from SIUE in 1972. He was the editor at Highland News Leader from 1972 to 1980. He was owner and editor of the Amboy News, Amboy, Ill., from 1980 to 1996, while there he was active in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Chamber of Commerce and Knights of Columbus. He has worked at The Nashville News as editor since 1996.

He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Nashville, Ill., where he served as a Eucharistic minister. He was recognized as a master editor by the Southern Illinois Editorial Association. He had served on the board of Nashville Public Library in Nashville, Ill.

Surviving are his wife, Debra M., nee Barr, Volz of Nashville, Ill., whom he married on June 15, 1973, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Highland, Ill; his parents, Alfred and Betty Volz of Highland, Ill.; two sons, Todd (Trina) Volz of Maryville, Ill., and Travis (Shannon) Volz of Nashville, Ill.; two grandsons, Hayden David Volz and William Alan Volz; a sister, Nancy Taylor of Highland, Ill.; and a nephew, Derrick (Ailee) Taylor of Staunton, Ill.

Memorials may be made to American Heart Association.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2012, and from 8 to 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Meridith Funeral Home in Highland, Ill.

Funeral: Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at St. Rose Catholic Church in St. Rose, Ill., with the Rev. Father Edward Schaefer officiating. Interment in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Highland, Ill.
