Debra Atchison Obituary

Debra Lynn Atchison passed away on Saturday, August 16th, 2025 at the age of 73. She passed away peacefully as she was surrounded with love and family. Debra had a lifetime dedicated to teaching English and literature, most recently at Mascoutah High School. She was proud of her students and colleagues and fostered an open-door policy that created a lasting impact. Debra was known for her sharp intellect, ingenuity, creativity, and deeply valued artistic expression. In her free time, Debra enjoyed painting, reading, knitting, and writing, and always had canine companions fill her home. Debra never met a stranger in her life as she had a bold and charismatic personality along with a never-ending sense of humor and infectious laugh that brought people together. Debra was also especially proud of her Irish heritage and had the opportunity to visit Ireland in recent years. Her greatest passion in life, however, was being a mother. She was loving, caring, selfless, nurturing, supportive, and strong in this role that she valued more than anything else. Her three children were undoubtedly the loves of her life, and she loved and embraced anyone that they loved unconditionally. Debra lived her life on her own terms with fearlessness, joy, passion, and a kind heart. Her wishes will be honored by her children and family by spreading her ashes in Glenamaddy, Ireland under her maiden name of Hussey. Debra's love and the memories she created will live on in the hearts of those she touched. Details on a celebration of life will be forthcoming.

Tara, your Mom gave you such great memories and I will always remember her laughter at the Girl Scout meetings. I am so sorry that you and the boys have lost her. She loved showing me the plaque you guys made her for Christmas a few years ago. I have planted a tree and donated to the ACLU in her name.

Yesterday

Deb will be missed by all friends she made in the Meetup groups. She was kindhearted and courageous with her health struggles earlier in life. Deb was always enthusiastic and friendly at the activities we attended together. She will missed by myself and many other friends she made in the Meetup groups. Sincere sympathy to her family.
