John Rains

John T. Rains, 70, of Granite City, Ill., born Dec. 6, 1941, in Murphysboro, Ill., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at Gateway Regional Medical Center, Granite City, Ill.

John dedicated 40 years to Granite City Steel as a door machine operator until he retired in 2000. He was a member of Second Baptist Church in Granite City, Steel Workers of America Retirees (SOAR) and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. In his free time John loved to work in his yard planting grass, flowers and working on his landscape. He will be remembered for the love of his family and the many special times shared together.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Adrean and Norma, nee House, Rains; son, John Michael Rains; daughter, Margaret Ann Rains; brother, Adrean Rains Jr.; sister-in-law, Jeanette Rains; and nephews, Chris Rains, Greg Rains.

He is survived by and will be missed by his wife, Gloria, nee James, Rains, whom he married on Aug. 17, 1968, at St. Joseph Catholic Church; son, Stephen (Melinda) Rains of Granite City; grandchildren, Richard (Katie) Hettwer III of Granite City, Samantha Hettwer of Granite City, and Christopher Hettwer of Granite City; great-granddaughter, Jordyn Hettwer of Granite City; sister, Betty (Don) James; brothers, Jim Rains, and Don (Jackie) Rains; aunt, Loretta Rains; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.

Memorials are suggested to the Second Baptist Church in Granite City, Holy Family Catholic Church, American Heart Association or National Diabetes Foundation.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at the funeral home with Pastor Brian Smith officiating. Burial with military rites will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville, Ill.
