Dear Dave:
My heart grew heavy as I read Monty's e-mail. You will
always have a special place in my memory bank. Oh,
how lucky we were to have grown up in Denair.

I first met David V. Sumney and his brother, Eddie, in 1946, when I was in the seventh grade. We grew up together in the small town of Denair, California in the San Joaquin Valley. Eddie taught me the difference in Sierra Madre and Sierra Nevada.
David was one of my closest friends, and eventually would be best man at my wedding. Ruth Sumney was our eighth grade teacher and Ben Sumney was our official family barber.
In 1954, David and I drove my 1951 Ford to Livingston, Montana to visit his birthplace, then on to Canada and the Northwest. He was a great friend and traveling companion.
We lost touch over the years, but renewed our friendship a few years ago at his mother's funeral in Pacific Grove, and it was as if he had never been away.
I always thought, with his great expertise and love for automobiles that he would be president of General Motors or Ford some day. (We had never heard of Toyota.)
Somewhere, David is soaring down a long heavenly road in a new supercharged V-8. I know he is happy.

Dave was such a good friend while living in Oxnard, CA. We spent many years bike riding, hanging out. He will be missed!

My friend Dave Sumney. I used to work with you first at Los Angeles County and then for the City of Beverly Hills. You were my supervisor. I left there in 1970 and I always asked mutual friends about you. Tonight just by accident I ran across your name and I found out that you had passed. You were a very decent and honorable person and I am grateful to have met you my friend.
I was with you when your brother Ed was killed in a traffic accident. I remember driving you home in your 1969 Toronado from the city of Beverly Hills to your parents house in Redlands and I remember meeting your wonderful parents. Ben whipped up an omelette for me and served it to me.
what completely wonderful people they both were.
Rest in peace my beautiful buddy Dave.
I will always have good memories of you.

I will always remember how kind Mr. Sumney was. I often booked rides for him as I work for WTA and he was always upbeat and had a sense of humor. He will be missed by all who talked to him and rode with him.

Our world stopped as we mourned over our buddy here in Birch Bay,As I remembered- David wearing his signature trademark polo shirt-,Funny how nine years of our friendship grew into a history, science lab, social studies lessons of life,"D" had all of the answers to everything,he was like our very own Reader's Digest,Sunset Magazine,Popular Mechanics & New York Times and abundance of his personal collection of software & computer gadget
magazines to keep him afloat of this fast-growing race of technology."D" kind heart & soul was much hidden in his sense of humor.I know- I will miss him each and every springtime here in Birch Bay and the ride into Bellingham wont be the same without his opinion of the stock market or the bus service. David- you'll be dearly miss along with the friends and families here in the northwest. Soar upwards to skies and fly your soul whatever your dreams may take you,the new found love and happiness will awaits you there along with the ones who will be thinking of you here today and yesterday. Good Bye my friend, see you there.
