Stephen Martino Obituary

Stephen (Steve) P. Martino

November 26, 1957 - May 20, 2024

Bellingham, Washington - Steve Martino passed away on May 20, 2024 in Bellingham, WA. Born in Inglewood, CA in 1957 to Joe and Barbara Martino, he is lovingly remembered by his family and friends, and is survived by his partner Sharon Cody, three children, Paul (Brooke), Ray (Allison), and Joe; sisters, Mary Vilotti (Dan) and Carol; and two grandsons, Dean and Sal.

He is remembered for his 30 years as a firefighter for the city of San Diego. He retired after serving as Captain for the rescue team at Station 4. His contributions to training and safety left an impact on a generation of his peers, including his son Joe, who started as a probationary firefighter for the city of San Diego in 2023.

Steve had a love of life that was filled with his many passions including fine woodworking and furniture making, exploring the outdoors, a love of music, and sharing homemade meals with family and friends. Despite facing terminal cancer, his spark for life never diminished through the very end. Steve will be remembered for his humility and dedication to craftsmanship in all aspects of his life.

A Celebration of Steve's Life will be held on August 11th, from 1-4 pm at the Rotary Shelter in the Lake Padden Park, Bellingham, WA. There will also be one held at NTC Park in San Diego on July 13th. Please contact the family for details.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Whatcom Hospice House: https://whatcomhospice.org/donate-online/.

Steve Martino was not an ordinary man. Steve Martino was every ordinary man all wrapped into one. Steve was an accumulation of everything good you see in men, and somehow none of the bad.
Steve replaced ego with humility.
Steve replaced anger and hatred with pity and empathy.
Steve replaced apathy with action.

Lastly, Steve replaced a person´s fear, pain, isolation and discomfort with a feeling of love and trust. He could sense a person´s uneasiness and he would make his way to them, simply to make a comment that eased their grief.

Steve was a model of what every man should be.
Those who never crossed paths with Steve missed out on life´s greatest experience. Fortunately, I lived that experience and I will cherish those times as long as air fills my lungs.

Rest easy Mouse, your spirit of love and kindness lives on.
