Francis was a classy guy thru & thru & was a lot of fun to be around. We were good friends at DePauw & I got to see him on a family vaca years ago when we stopped by the pool where he life guarded.

Francis & I went to DePauw University & lived on the same floor of a dorm. He was such a character. There was a fly in his room s & he couldn´t get rid of it so he put some sugar on the top of his tongue & sat quietly hoping the fly would go for the sugar. That strategy didn´t work out but it sure was fun to see him in fly catching mode!

Francis was a great guy. His sense of humor made him a lot of fun in the dorm at DePauw University. He was a studious guy as well, worked hard, played hard too. One of my best memories of Francis was when I was on a family vacation and found ourselves in Bennington. Somehow or another we found the pool where he was a lifeguard and there he was!

I went to college with Francis @ DePauw University. What a character he was, great basketball player too and had a quirky sense of humor. One of his antics was in his dorm room when he decided to see if he could catch a fly in his room. So, he put some sugar on the end of his tongue and stuck it out. For better or worse he didn't catch the fly but sure got a lot of laughs which likely scared the bejesus out of that fly!

Francis was such a creative & fun guy in college! He once tried to catch a fly in his dorm room by putting a little sugar on the tip of his tongue & waited patiently for the fly to land. The fly won that day... We also spent a winter term together in Washington, DC that was fun.

Wow!! What a shock to hear the news of Francis' passing. He was such a wonderful father, “cuz” and friend, always willing to take the time to be an adviser to so many of our young family members. I will forever remember his wry wit, his love for his children, his advice to my son, Reid, during the pursuit of his law degree, his competitive nature on the golf course, and his love of hunting with my brothers at “the Pond”. He even took the time to teach me the game of “Pitch” at camp. I think I should mention, however, that the longer the game went on, and the more we imbibed, the less he seemed to care about my card playing proficiency....

The entire Morrissey clan, extended family, and the entire town of Bennington has lost a great man far to soon. Rest in peace, cuz....

Dear Barbara and Family:
Such shocking news of Francis' passing is a huge loss for all of you to face. Judging by my own feelings of emptyness and loss for words, you must be experiencing an overwhelming and unparalleled challenge without his input of yet another of his life's stories to ease the pain of the moment and hope for the future.
Francis has been my financial advisor, legal counselor, role model and more importantly a friend in each of my life's crises for the past 25 years. He inevitably had a story with a relative moral or applicable solution. That is, if I got the message with his humor.
Just a couple of weeks ago I received a letter from Francis answering some legal challenge; but finishing his subject matter, he updated me on each of his children's whereabouts and accomplishments. He was such an involved and proud parent. He will indeed be remembered for his life-long involvement in ever-so-many community, school and sports activities in the Bennington area. He and your whole family have coached, encouraged, and promoted my son and grandchildren in soccer and lacrosse, as you have done for many of the area youth. He was unequalled in his energies on school committees and endless roles in leadership in the Bennington area. Beyond that, he was always a dedicated family man with a humorous story to relate to other families. Saying just the right thing seemed to be "off the cuff" quick wit, both healing and caring.
He was never to busy to return a phone call, write an advisory opinion, accompany me to court, or share a story to easy my troubled mind or set me back on the right track no matter the cause. I remember him calling on his mother, Rose, to give me a femanine prospective and reassure me that she was to be taken seriously as a female role model. He counseled me in helping my own mother in her senior years, according to experiences gained from caring for his own mom. His stories were ever so helpful. Sharing some of his own legal challenges promoted friendship and reassured me of his own vulnerability to life's trouble spots.
Words cnnnot express my emptiness or my fear of getting along without his thoughtful interpretations . However, my loss holds not a candle to your sorrow today and the days ahead. May God hold you and your family in his loving arms as I lift you all up in my prayers.
Memories and thoughts of Francis will live on so long as we continue to hold him dear and lovingly appreciated.
God be with you all.

He was truly an amazingly insightful and kind friend and family member. I will never forget the many conversations we had about what to expect when taking on the practice of law and his continued interest in my thoughts as I began my career. In thinking back to his speech at Auntie Linda's Celebration I remember coming away thinking that he truly recognized the good that matters in life. He made one heck of an impression on me during my time and conversations with him and he will be sorely missed.

My best goes out to all of his friends and family. The world is less one great man.

Daniel Luneau

August 17, 2011

My name is Daniel Luneau. I am Chair of District # 6 Enviornamental Commission in northwestern Vermont. I have been on the commission for just over ten years and have known Francis the entire time having had the sincere pleasure of meeting him at my first trainining session as chair in early 2002. The best advice that I ever received as chair was from Francis. Being a newly appointed chair I asked Francis what would be the best advice he could give me and he said, "never let anyone leave a hearing feeling that they had not had the opportunity to have been heard". I have followed that advice without deviation and it has never failed me. It would be reasonable to ask why did you seek Francis out for advice? The answer is very simple, he was obviously the smartest man in the room and I needed guidance in how to perform my new job. Over the years I always looked forward to training sessions because I knew that Francis would be in attendance and as a result I would have the opportunity to learn from him.
Please accept my sincere and humble offering of great regret that Francis has left us all for his rightful place with God. It is my hope that we all have the opportunity to rejoin him some day.

My best!

Dear Morrissey Family,

I am deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Francis, a fine lawyer, superb judge as chair of the District 8 Act 250 Commission, and a great friend. I will miss the time we spent together when dealing with a client matter, as we always took considerably more time to visit about everything else that could be raised for discussion. He was a treasure. My heart goes out to you all.

Dear Barb and Family,

I can't remember a time since I came to Bennington that I didn't know Francis. When I went to work at Evans' I got to know him better, but had always been aware of his devotion to Bennington and his amazing community service. Living on Union Street, we frequently saw each other as I was walking and he was coming and going from parking out behind his office. We had little "car window sound bite" conversations about everything from sports to the stock market. I will miss my interaction with him, and Bennington will miss him for all he has done. I extend my most sincere sympathy to you, the children, and Francis' many friends and associates.

Sincerely,

I was deeply saddened to learn of Franny's sudden passing. I have known Francis my entire life--he and my father were best friends since they were kids and remained inseparable through adulthood. I have so many fond memories growing up with him and the entire Morrissey family. He was always so full of life--a great jokester--and a natural partner in crime for my dad. It's hard to accept that he's no longer here, but his loved ones should take comfort in his indelible spirit and the impact that he has had on so many. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Morrissey family during this difficult time. Francis was always calling our daughter by the name of Martha, which isn't her name, because he enjoyed picking on her. He coached the 5th grade boys travel soccer team and our son enjoyed the experience thoroughly. Francis will be missed because he was such a likable, fun man who always seemed to have the right thing to say.
