Joe Birchfield Obituary

Joe L Birchfield, aged 88, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones in the comfort of his home in Windsor, MA. Born in Talladega, Alabama on May 24, 1937, he was the son of Herbert and Nelle Smith Birchfield. The family relocated to Porterville California when he was 7 years old.

Joe was a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 59 years, Margaret. He is also survived by his son Christopher and his wife Marie of Staten Island, NY and his son Jeremy and his wife Laura of Brooklyn, NY. Joe also had 5 grandchildren (Jonathan, Melissa, Jason, Jordana and Dylan) and two great-grandchildren (Matthew and Melanie).

Joe was a Veteran and served in the United States Air Force for 7 years during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After leaving the Air Force, he spent 2 years in Greenland as a Radar Technician. He then relocated to New York and worked as a telephone switchman and computer programmer for the New York Telephone Company. During that time he attended Baruch College of City University of New York at night on the G.I Bill and he received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree, Cum Laude. He was also elected to the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. While in New York, he met and married the love of his life, Margaret Jean Davidson.

Joe was an avid athlete. He ran the NYC Marathon three times and participated in a few biathlons and triathlons. He kept to a physical routine and worked out 3 times a week in the gym into his late 80's. He was a cycling enthusiast and he loved ballroom dancing. Joe and his wife traveled the world and went on many cruises. He also enjoyed taking care of his 11 acre property.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours will be held, Wednesday, August 20, 2025 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Dery-Foley Funeral Home, 890 E. Main St., Dalton. Graveside services will be held, Thursday, August 21, 2025 at 11 a.m. at Shaw Cemetery in Windsor, MA. Followed by a Celebration of Life at 12 p.m. at the Windsor Town Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in his name to the Windsor Volunteer Ambulance or HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of Dery-Foley Funeral Home, 890 E. Main St., Dalton, MA 01226
