Roger Fachini Obituary

Roger Fachini 1943 - 2009 WILLIAMSTOWN Roger John Fachini, 65, of 189 Stratton Road, died Thursday, June 25, at Albany Medical Center following cardiac arrest on Friday, June 19th, while on the 11th hole of his beloved Taconic Golf Course in Williamstown. Roger was born Oct. 6th, 1943, in North Adams, to John J. Fachini and Rena Colo Fachini of Williamstown. He was a member of the first graduating class at Mt. Greylock Regional High School in 1962. Roger proudly served in the National Guard for seven years. He attended the Williams College School of Banking and the Robert Morris School of Commercial Lending at the University of Massachusetts. In the 1970s Roger worked for the First Agricultural Bank in North Adams, and went on to spend more than 15 years in various management roles in the land development industry. In 1995 he was appointed Assessor and Chairman of the Board of Assessors for the City of North Adams, a position he held until his retirement in 2006. He was active in the Berkshire County Assessors Association, serving as Vice President from 1998 to 2000, as President from 2000 to 2002, and as a member of the executive board until his retirement. He was respected and loved by his co-workers. Never one to sit for very long, Roger then renewed his real estate license and joined long-time friend, Tom Elder, at Elder and Associates Real Estate in Williamstown. He was the current President of the Stratton Hills Association Trust and served on the board since moving there in 2005. Roger had a passion for golf, snowshoeing, walking, fly-fishing, and anything that got him outdoors. He was a long-standing and supportive member of Taconic Golf Club, and a regular at Williams College football games, Clark Art events, and Board of Trade functions. He was a true native son of Williamstown and had a deep and abiding appreciation for the beauty of The Berkshires. Roger's favorite role was that of a loving, proud, and devoted father. The times he cherished most were spent with his daughter, Jennifer Helies, and her husband, Brad, whether at his home in Williamstown, or with them in New York City. Roger was also a generous and loyal friend, ready to lend a hand, do a favor, offer thoughtful advice, an honest opinion, and always armed with a quick-witted and humorous comeback. He counted his family and friends as his richest treasures. He was greatly loved in return and will be missed by all who knew him. He leaves his daughter, Jennifer Helies, and son-in-law, Brad Helies, of New York City, ex-wife, Judith Dawson Fachini, of Bennington, Vt., and numerous cousins throughout the area. FUNERAL NOTICE: A celebration of Roger's Life will be take place Thursday, July 2, 2009 at 4 p.m. on the lawn at his home at 189 Stratton Road, Williamstown, with the Rev. Mr. Bruce Ziter, Deacon of St. Elizabeth Church officiating. A reception will follow at the Orchards Restaurant. Hi Jen & Brad,
Your Dad's service was perfect. He would have loved it. I can't believe he is gone. Rog was a good friend. After he retired from the assessors office we still kept in touch, my email was always full of articles on life, real estate and jokes. I will miss him. He loved you very much and enjoyed sharing his adventures in New York. I am so sorry for your loss.

Jen and Brad, I am so sorry to hear of your loss! Our deepest sympathies to you both. I will miss my classmate from the first graduating class of Mt. Greylock High. Your Dad was a lot of fun and always shared his good humor and broad smile. I will cherish his memory.

I met Roger while he was the Assessor for North Adams - he was a great guy and will be missed by all that knew him. Later, after he retired and joined the Real Estate Company - I would run in to him from time to time at the property he was selling - and as always he always went the extra mile to help, share a story and just make you smile with a quick witted remark. My sincere sympathy to Rogers family.

Respectfully,

Roger was my neighbor when I lived at Stratton Hill and I remember him being the first to welcome me and make me feel at home. That was truly special to me as a young boy coming all the way from Louisiana not knowing anyone ... He made me feel like I had known him all my life --- like he was a father to me ... (and he showed it in his special way when I broke the rules that one time and had a vehicle on the lawn)

I am so sad to see you go, Roger ... I greatly loved and appreciated you in the short while I knew you...

I offer my deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family...

We were so sorry to read of Roger's untimely death. Ed and I could tell you story after story about him, especially as he was very close to my Dad, Bob Steele.
But, we will share our first story of Roger. In the summer of 1976, Ed wrote a nature column for the Transcript's Summer Scope. I did the illustrations. We did this for three years. But, the FIRST congratulatory and accolades letter came from Roger!
We have a great fondness for him and know first hand how many lives he touched in so many ways.
He will be missed by many,Jen and Brad!

Roger was one of "my assessors" when I worked with the DOR/Bureau of Local Assessment. 'Trekking' the 70++ miles to North Adams was always an adventure; I always so looked forward to working with Roger. He had a delightful sense of humor and a true zest for life. My condolences to you, Jen

Our heartfelt thoughts and sympathy are with you. What a shock! Roger was a great guy and very helpful last year when we had to sell my mother's house long distance.

I never met Roger in person, only dealt with him for business over the phone or via email, yet he is one person that always stuck out in my mind. What an extremely nice man, one you felt you knew already without even meeting. My heart and prayers go out to his family and daughter he always gloated about, you can tell when someone is so proud of their children, and he certainly was. I'm sure he finished the last 8 holes up above!

Roger will be truly missed by many. I was on his dart team this past year and we had such a good time, plus we won! I wish I were there to be of help but I am in California and will not be there for the service.
Please accept my deepest condolences.
He was a truly fun and unique person.
