PRYOR - Kaneeta Harris Red Star, Baalappe Kaalahkush "Going into battle many times," 75, of Pryor, matriarch of the Red Star family, passed away from injuries sustained in a car accident Dec. 14, 2014. Kaneeta was born on Oct. 20, 1939, daughter of Wallace Red Star Sr. and Amy Bright Wings Red Star, a member of the Piegan Lodge Clan and Sore lip child.
Kaneeta was an adventurous soul who traveled to Santa Fe, N.M., where she made many friends. She received her Bachelor of Art degree from Eastern Montana College. She worked in a Special Education program while residing in Santa Fe. She worked for Pryor Public Schools, the Indian Health Service, as a tourism coordinator for the Little Big Horn College and, for the past 15 years, worked at the Chief Plenty Coups Museum in Pryor. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her great-grandchildren, during track meets, basketball games and around the house.
Her parents; son James Young; sisters Lani Red Star, Nora Bird and Veronica Dust, Virginia Covers Up, Andrea Good Luck; brothers, Wendell Red Star, Sr., Byron Bird; and niece Merida Red Star preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughter Amy "Doonie"; grandson Tate; great-grandchildren Zaylyn and Teya Young; sisters Redstar (Kelly) Price, Walla (Max) Spotted Bear, Ardith (Clifford) Bird In Ground Sr. and Theodora Red Star; brothers Kevin, Aaron (Susan), Marlon (Chrislyn), Wallace (Molly) Jr., Greg Olsen and Bernard Covers Up.
Extended family includes Red Star, Dust, Old Bull, Covers Up, Bear Ground, Hunts Arrow, Don't Mix, Peters, Turnsback, Gros Ventre, Plain Bull, Bright Wings, Plain Feather, Bull Shows, Moccasin, Half, Young Swallow, Bear Below, Other Bull, Bell Rock, Bird Hat, Bird Far Away, Holds, Alden, Stands Over Bull, Morrison, Crow Flies High, Drags Wolf, Fox, Bird, Smith, Four Bears, Baker, Birdsbill and Wicker families.
Evening services will be held Thursday, Dec. 18, at 6 p.m. Funeral Services Friday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m. both at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Billings. Interment will follow at the Lodge Grass Cemetery. Memories may be shared at www.dahlfuneralchapel.com.
