Daniel Leno, 76, Bismarck, died Jan. 20, 2001, at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. James Sorenson officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Daniel Gottlieb Leno was born Nov. 30, 1924, at Tuttle, N.D., the son of Daniel and Emelia (Bechthold) Leno. He was raised and educated in Tuttle, graduating in 1943. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944, serving until 1946. He took part in the naval engagements off Leyte, Luzon and Okinawa, and was always very proud of having served his country. Upon his return from service, he married Delores Biech on Nov. 23, 1947, in Tuttle. They farmed together in Tuttle until moving to Bismarck in 1955. He then became a guard at the North Dakota State Penitentiary until he went to work for the Bismarck Police Department in 1957. He retired as Lieutenant of Detectives in 1977. He continued to work as a private investigator. His years of being a public servant were always a high point of his life.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War and a member of the Armed Guard. Daniel loved to hunt and fish but his first love was always his family, whom he so dearly loved.

Daniel is survived by his wife, Delores; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Jerome and Debbie Leno, Tempe, Ariz., and Kirby Leno and Brian Leno, both of Bismarck; one grandchild, Kari Ann Leno; one great-granddaughter, Daria; and three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and Kenneth Steele, Redfield, S.D., Catherine and Jake Brose, Longmont, Colo., and Clara Trautman, Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edward and Fred; and five sisters, Emelia, Eva, Hattie, Alvina and Pauline.
