Herbert was born Dec. 3, 1929, in Napoleon. He started his life working on a farm for several years. He joined the Air Force in 1950, which he served for 21 years, five months and three days. He met the love of his life, Jenny Wertz, and then married her on July 27, 1951. They spent 54 years together. Together, they raised four children, Mike, John, Richard and Bruce.

Herbert loved to talk and tell stories about his life and ventures. He also loved to play cards, fish and loved to spend time with family, friends and neighbors. His favorite TV pastimes were watching John Wayne and Steven Seagal movies. He loved watching WWE wrestling. He was a great cook and could make just about anything.

He will be dearly missed by everyone who came into contact with his joyous life, especially by his children, Mike (Ione), John and Bruce (Diane); his grandchildren, Mike Jr. (Gina), Nathan (Mae), Jason, Holly, Kyle and two special grandsons, Joe (Deb) and Johnny (Erica), with whom he raised and considered them his own children; great- and step-grandchildren, Toni, Julian, Austin, Alec, Brooklyn, Sydney, Aireal, Tina, Damien, Felicity, Jaden, Erich, Luke, Freedom, Danica, Derick and Natalie; great-nephew, Ben and great-nieces, LD, Stacy, and Jessica; his sisters, Annie and Francis; and his special friend, Alvina.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jenny; son, Richard; brothers, Otto, David and George; and sister, Violet.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Deb, Kari and Kim for taking care of our father and grandfather.
