Augustine Masiello Obituary

Age 76, of Brickyard Rd, Woodstock, CT died Oct 7 at Day Kimball Hospital, Putnam, CT. He leaves his wife of 56 years, Emily U. (Fury) Masiello, daughters Janet Marie Perry of Pomfret and Carolyn Ann Hart, also of Woodstock, and sons Christopher Lee, who passed away in 1964 at age 7, and Curtis Michael of Alexandria, VA, and his sister, Marianna Kane of Atlantic Beach, FL. He had nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and nine nieces and nephews. Command Sergeant Major Masiello (US Army Ret) was born in New York City, the son of Felix and Grace (Fioriti) Masiello. He graduated from Mount St. Michael High School in 1945 and from Iona College, 1949. He served on active duty in the U.S. Army in 1946 and 1950, the New York NG, 1953-1955, and the USAR 1946-1953 and 1964-1987. Among the units in which he served include the 11th Special Forces Gp (ABN), 3d Battalion, 35th Infantry, 187th Infantry Brigade (Sep), and 94th Army Reserve Command. He originally was employed in the textile industry in New Yorkl. In 1955, he moved to Wayland, MA, and co-founded Kilbanon, an Irish clothing import company headquarters in Boston. In 1967, he became a stockbroker with Paine Webber in Boston and later Worcester and moved to his current residence in 1969. He was later employed at Smith Barney in Hartford, CT. He retired in 1998. He taught at Amhurst College in Woodstock and at Nichols College in Webster, MA. He was a past town selectman and held other government offices in Woodstock. He was a member of the CT State Teachers Retirement Board. He was editor of "Comings and Goings" a community newsletter. He was president of Chapter 54, Special Forces Association, 2001-2003 and was treasurer of American Legion Post 111. A Funeral Mass will be held at the Most Holy Trinity Parish in Pomfret, CT on Mon, Oct 11 at 11 AM, followed by burial next to his son Christopher at the North Cemetery, Wayland, MA at 1 PM. Calling hours at Gilman Funeral Home at 104 Church Street in PUTNAM, CT will be 5-8 PM, Sun, Oct 10 and 9:30-10:30 AM on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Oncology Department at Day Kimball Hospital, Putnam, CT 06260.

Emily,

I was so sadden to learn of Gus' passing. He will always have a warm place in my heart. I enjoyed working with him at Smith Barney - he was a great role model - I admired him very much. My condolences to you and the rest of the family.
