CHARLES BURKE Obituary

BURKE, Charles L. Jr. Age 88 of Reading, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2020. Beloved husband of the late Annette I. Burke of Reading. Loving father of Charles J. Burke and his wife Nancy of Stoneham, Christine L. Richardson and her husband Michael of Reading, Carolyn L. Lermond and her husband Leo of Reading and Daniel E. Burke of Reading. Beloved brother of the late Evelyn G. (Burke) Hines of South Weymouth. Dear brother-in-law of Alice F. Pinard of Hudson, NH. Also survived by 7 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Charlie was born in Boston, to the late Mabel (Breen) Brennan and Charles L. Burke, Sr.

He was a graduate of the High School of Commerce in Boston, Bentley School of Accounting and Finance in Boston and Northeastern University in Boston. He served his country during the Korean war based at the Naval Air Station Squantum in Quincy. Charlie was a Certified Public Accountant working for various companies early in life, later opening his own firm, Charles L. Burke, CPA, in his families' hometown of Stoneham. His "Special Place" was and will always be Meredith, NH and the Lakes Region. He spent much of his life summering there with his extended family and he passed that love onto all of his children. For over 50 years, he proudly served on the Board of Director's for the Winter Hill Bank in Somerville, most recently (retired) as Chairman of the Board. He was a devoted member of the Rotary Club and a parishioner of St. Patrick's, both in Stoneham. Charlie was a charismatic character with and infectious laugh and a large heart. He was always willing to listen and offer help in any way he could. He was extremely proud of his family. He will be sorely missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Due to the current pandemic, a private service and burial will be held for the immediate family. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at a future date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charlie's memory to Stoneham High School Booster Club, Inc., 149 Franklin Street, Stoneham, MA, 02180 or a charity of your choosing. If Charlie was your accountant -- he was your friend, and we were fortunate to have that relationship since we began our business in 1973. Charlie was as honest as the day is long; and charitable, and considerate almost to a fault. We trusted his knowledge and advise, and valued his friendship. We will miss him very much.

We have no idea who took the Old Milwaukees.
We know you'd never speed up or down 93 in a Peugeot.
We'd never tell Annette you had 3 hot dogs.
We loved the junk you bought while grocery shopping.
Most of all, we know you loved us.
Thank you for everything.

Charlie was a 'special' kind of man as he exuded a zest for life itself with love for his friends, clients and employees. I have always advocated a 'Hall of Fame' for Stoneham Citizens and Business people who have graced our community with success, opportunity for many , with pride to be among us and Charles L. Burke is certainly one of them.
I am glad that he found a 'piece of the Earth' he loved in Meredith New Hampshire which matches the beauty of this fine man's soul. He was brilliant, friendly, energetic, and 'full' as a Human being. Rest in Peace good friend. No one, who was your friend or family member shall ever forget you... Infinite peace is wished for you. Frank and Rose Pignone

My deepest condolences to the whole Burke family for their loss. Your dad was a wonderful man with spirit, wisdom, joy, kindness, and generosity too. I'm so glad I got to know him and take care of him for over a year. He taught me how to appreciate life and I enjoyed his everyday sense of humor, his gorgeous baby blue eyes, and his smile that lit up a room. He loved his family so much and talked about you and his beautiful place in Merideth all the time. I am going to truly miss him so much. He touched my heart and a piece of me was lost when he went into rehab and I couldn't see that amazing smile anymore. I'm grateful to have been his CNA and his friend too. He will always keep a place in my heart. May God guide you and your family through this very difficult time. Also may you all find peace moving forward knowing that both your mom and dad are together again.

My condolences to Charlie's family and his company employees.
I suspect Charlie's kindness and business expertise is locally legendary. When my family (At age 18, I was the oldest of 9), lost our apartment, we were fortunate enough to buy an abandoned house and rehab it with family and friends. When it was tax time, Charlie not only took care of our tax questions/filing (gratis),but spent his valuable tax time to sit with my mother and myself to talk about how the family was doing.
Another time, my family lost our house to a fire. It was a total loss, including all paperwork (tax info etc.). Even though it was tax time, April 10, Charlie not only reconciled my family tax situation again, but spent time talking about how my family was doing.
A gregarious, kind and gentle man, always with a smile!
