My husband and I recently visited the USS Constitution and I was sad to read about Chris as the Constitution´s most recent loss. Almost 15 years later, he is in our hearts, and our prayers are with your family.

I had the Honor of serving alongside Chris aboard USS Constitution and the reward of witnessing how his smile and personality would affect visitors of all ages. As the 10th anniversary, of losing this bright Navy star, and Memorial Day approaches, I wear his 2008 'in memory of Chris' wristband.

There are no words to express the impact that Chris has left with all of us. He knew what it meant to care for others and he knew what the true meaning of a friend is (John 15:13). I had the pleasure of really getting to know and love Chris on our trip aboard the USCG Cutter EAGLE. He is missed daily as a friend, a brother and a shipmate. And, as a piece of my heart is missing, I will always remember your smiling face and carry your love for others with me. May God keep you and use you as the angel that you are. My love to you always...

Dear Chris:

Before long you will be embarking on the next phase of your life's journey that our Lord has laid out for you. You are my son and a child of God.

Remember that wherever you go fire means life. Fire to cook your food, for boiling water so that it's safe to drink, to light your way and to stay warm at night.

Remember also that the fire of the Holy Spirit keeps us alive in Christ. The fire of the Spirit enlightens our hearts in eternal hope when we read his word. The fire keeps us in faith as it flickers within us and it's passion for excellence pushes us to do all we can to the Glory of God.

Chris, I want to encourage you and support you, to listen to you when you need to talk and to share wisdom when you ask for it. Please let me know how I can help encourage you. I know that we will be apart soon and neither of us knows for how long. It could be fifty days or fifty years.

So, I want you to know that our Lord will never leave you nor forsake you. And if the Lord calls me Home, I will be there waiting for you, but I ask one thing of you and that is don't let the Fire of the Holy Spirit go out in your life, because I want you to be there on the other side. You see nothing else in this world really matters except that you be there.

It is a pleasure being here with you, being in your life, being a part of your spiritual growth. The Lord has given you many gifts including a passion for excellence. Excellence in thought, word and deed.

Choose to be around those who expect the Bes, enjoy it when things are tough, the Lord is making you better. Enjoy the Humor of the Moment, and laugh. Laughter relaxes us so we can do our Best. Get Lost in the pursuit of Christ's excellence, on the Field of you Dreams. He has made you for a purpose and with a plan for the World of His Creation.

I am giving you this letter in hopes that you in turn will write letters to your Sons and Daughters sharing your love, encouragement and wisdom with them. With computers, email and text messages the art of letter writing has fallen into disuse during my generation and could all but disappear during yours.

So, I hope that you will keep the spirit of love alive through your Letters from Dad like this one with your children. They will enjoy reading and re-reading what you have to say to them, just like our Bible is our Letters from our Dad in Heaven.

I am enclosing this letter in a special wooden treasure box. I would like you to keep all of our treasures in it. I had it made out of Olive Wood, grown in Bethlehem, Israel. Our Lord was a carpenter in Bethlehem and you are a pretty good carpenter in your own right.

I hope to pass on more treasures to you as the years go by and we share them together, but I would like to share the things that you are interested in.
I love you, Son.

Sincerely,

Dad, aka Samuel Gwinn Maurer

Chris is amazing. I was never terribly close to him, but the image that is burned into my brain of him is his smile. I don't think I ever saw him unhappy or angry the few years I knew him at Maize in band. He was always very dedicated and disciplined, but at the same time laid back and humorous. We should all strive to have the same attitude about life as he did. I will never forget him, and I'm sure noone who ever met him will either. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I was his first supervisor onboard USS CONSTITUTION and he was a gem of a worker. I also had the privilege to know him personally as a friend. It was an HONOR for me to have him as a member of the Color Guard and flag passer during my retirement ceremony. He volunteered for both. He will be missed by all he touched. Chris will always be a true shipmate to us all on the CONSTITUTION. My condolences to the Maurer family and God Bless.

For Sam, Patrice & Stephanie: Like a burning candle, Chris’s life spread light and warmth and touched us all. Even though his earthly flame has been extinguished, his spirit will dwell within our hearts and his brilliant light will travel the universe for eternity, for energy never dies, it just changes form. May you find solace, knowing his glow was cast so very wide and encompassed so many. God keep you and help you to stand. We pray for you.
