CLAUDIO KRAUS Obituary

KRAUS, Claudio Passed away a few days after his 70th birthday. He came to the USA from Milan, Italy in 1966, at age 17, to attend college. He received a BS and Master's Degree in electrical engineering at Lowell Tech., and went on to pursue a second Master's and PhD in economics at Northeastern University. He taught economics/finance at Bentley College until the early 80's, when he decided to try a new idea. In 1981, he initiated a small business importing quartzes, geodes and agates from Brazil. He tested the product at regional craft shows and found enough customer interest to approach Faneuil Hall Marketplace with the idea of a shop. In 1982, he opened Geoclassics, the first gem, mineral, jewelry and fossil store in Boston. As of this writing the shop has remained true to his vision for 37 years. In addition to running his own store, Claudio was an important member of the Executive Committee of the Merchant Board at Faneuil Hall, the body that represents the shop owners. For many years he has given his time, energy and extensive knowledge of Faneuil Hall to preserve its original intent to provide a nurturing business environment for small, local businesses. Claudio had lots of interests; he was an accomplished sportsman; soccer in his youth, skiing, tennis. He loved history and politics, domestic and international, and he would always appreciate a lively discussion on these topics. His real tender spot, however, was for animals, especially dogs, he found himself a 4-legged buddy on many a vacation! He leaves behind his wife, Lorrie, and a brother, Danny, and family in Milan, Italy. A Service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 11am, at the Doherty Funeral Services, 855 Broadway, SOMERVILLE, MA, 617-625-4320 or dohertyfuneralservice.com In lieu of flowers, kindly send donations to an animal charity e.g. ASPCA or PAWS.

I've been busy in recent weeks but I went by the store tonight, and I was shocked to see the sign on the door. Now I see why. I am so very sorry to hear about the passing of Claudio. My sincere condolences to his wife and family.

Although I didn't know Claudio, having only seen him once (in the store) I absolutely loved Geoclassics; I have spent so many happy hours browsing in there, and I bought many stunning items of jewellery that give me a lot of pleasure. I've never known such a great shop. I will treasure my special collection always, and my memories of the store. I will miss it greatly. Linda A., your UK customer.

So sorry to hear of Claudio's passing. I worked for Claudio and Lorrie at the Faneuil Hall store in the early nineties. One of many fond memories: On Cinco de Mayo, after closing the shop for the night, Claudio took a bunch of us downstairs to Zuma, a Mexican restaurant where we spent a couple hours hanging out and enjoying lively conversation, nachos and margaritas. When it was time for him to leave, he suggested we stay and order whatever we wanted and that it was his treat! Claudio was an interesting and unique soul who made a positive impact on many, many people...
My sincere condolences to Lorrie and Claudio's family.

Danny, I am so sorry to learn of Claudios passing. I will always remember Claudio as kind energetic person who was willing to help everyone. It seems like only yesterday we were all together in the Economics Department at Northeastern.

I met Claudio in 1984 through my wife Pouran. Claudio and I enjoyed many long evenings discussing variety of topics from City politics to world affairs, Academics, Technology and everything in between. He was bright, charming, compassionate, insightful and above all a very empathetic human being. His love for his cats was so viral to the extent that I too fell him love with one of his cats, Frisky. I will always remember him calling me Farhood and I got a kick out of it every time. Claudio was authentic and one of a kind and will be sorely missed.

Rest in Peace, my friend.

My condolences to the family. I just wanted the family to know what a great teacher he was. I met Claudio when he taught part-time while working on his PhD at Northeastern. I was one of his students even though actually a year older than him. The fact that I remembered him after over 44 years speaks volumes about the impact he had on me. He was by far one of the best instructors I had throughout my collegiate years. He will be truly missed.

So sad to hear about Claudio's passing. I knew him when he taught at Bentley. His students loved him. He was a warm and kind man, with a zest for life that I admired. He was smart, charismatic, funny and passionate. His smile was infectious. I shared many a happy time with Claudio and his colleagues in the Economics department - Dale, Don, Greg and Andy.

I remember when I first met Claudio.I was in High School and met my Aunt Lorrie's new boyfriend. He made me feel very comfortable talking to him,at the time we were talking about his blue chevelle and how it needed new springs.Even though we just met he made me feel like my opinion was important.Back then our family used to get together every holiday and I would look foward to seeing everyone.Sadly times change .I miss those days as much as I will miss Claudio.Rest in Peace

A special man, a dear friend to my husband Charlie Harrington. Claudio you always made others feel special, you always engaged my children in discussions and fed their curiosity about rocks, fossils, and Boston. You gave us many great memories that we shall cherish always. May you catch up with Charlie and Ron.
We will say a pray for you and keep Lorrie in our prayers also....The Harrington Family (Regina, Chaz, Kaitlin, Sean, Tara, and baby Meghan)
