DAVID SMOYER Obituary

SMOYER, David Brooks Of Jamaica Plain, passed away peacefully on June 1, from complications of dementia. He was 82. Devoted to his wife, Mary, their 58th anniversary was June 1, and to their children's families, David relished sports, travel and community. He was a master conversationalist, always interested in the adventures and minutia of the lives of friends and family. Born on New Year's Eve 1941 in Akron, Ohio, David was very proud of his roots there, the birthplace of his parents, Stanley Smoyer and Barbara Brooks Smoyer. Inspired by memories of his visits with grandparents at Turkeyfoot Lake, he loved to swim in whatever open water, lake, river, ocean, he came upon. David grew up in Princeton, NJ and his treasured friendships from carefree days as a youth were a through-line in a journey full of enthusiastic competitions and spirited recreation in family rooms and out of doors, particularly during seaside summers in Marion, MA. David was raised to put education first and he followed up his many accomplishments as a student by spending most of his career working for schools. He attended Princeton Country Day, Phillips Andover, '59, Dartmouth, '63 and Harvard Law, '66. At Dartmouth, he earned nine varsity letters, in soccer, squash and tennis. A goalkeeper in soccer, he was named to the 1962 All-America first team. David practiced law for only six months before returning to his first love: sports. He worked for the North American Soccer League, in the athletic departments at Yale and Swarthmore and at the Roxbury Latin School in West Roxbury. Of these, it was at Roxbury Latin where he found a home, immersing himself in its community during and outside school hours An energetic and creative traveler, David visited 48 states, 40 countries and six continents. His favorite countries were France and Egypt, He was known to leave home with only a backpack and a reservation for the first night. He was an outgoing tourist and loved talking with anyone he met, resulting in warm connections across the globe. A highlight was taking his seven grandchildren, as each reached age 10, on a trip of their choice. Born a Cleveland Indians fan, David was at the Polo Grounds when Willie Mays' famous 1954 World Series catch foiled Cleveland. But he later worked in concessions at Candlestick Park, after the Giants moved to San Francisco and became a huge admirer of Mays and San Francisco itself, where he and Mary would honeymoon. Adopting the Red Sox in the '70s, he was in Fenway for Game 6 of the '75 World Series. He attended a men's World Cup in France, Wimbledon in England, the British Open in Scotland, the Olympics in Atlanta and Los Angeles. Inspired by his time as the Swarthmore women's soccer coach, he was swept up in the U.S. frenzy around the 1999 women's World Cup. He got to every Dartmouth game he could. At his most frequent haunt, Fenway, he usually would seek out a free, or almost free, ticket, putting up one finger in the air. Year after year, he kept a record: In 2004, he attended 31 games at the total cost of $72.20. In Boston, David volunteered at Squashbusters, the Hyde Square Task Force, the Cape Verdean Task Force and Beacon Academy. Living in Jamaica Plain for over 30 years, he loved museums, jogging, biking, tennis in Franklin Park and Carter Playground. He even swam once or twice in Jamaica Pond. David is survived by Mary Howland Smoyer; and their children, Laura (Christopher Myers), Amy (Jaime Muleiro) and Mark (Jennifer Reese); and grandchildren, Isabel, Edith, Joseph, Henry, Owen, Javier and Michael. He also leaves his sister, Nancy. He was predeceased by his sister, Janet and his brother, Bill. A Memorial Service is being planned for Autumn. Gifts in David's memory may be donated at Squashbusters.org

Mary and the entire Smoyer family,

I met David in 1998 when I became Headmaster of Hillside school. For the next 17 years David was a friend, supporter, and mentor. No member of our board of trustees was more involved or more valuable to our growth and success than David. Both of us had worked in the athletic department at one time and we shared that and other commonalities. But what I appreciated most of David was his incredible sense of humor and deep devotion to those in need. When my own wife, Carrie, developed dementia in her 40s David was incredibly supportive of me. I wish I could´ve been more supportive of him during his time of need. I will be forever grateful for his friendship.

Please accept my, condolences in the loss of such an unforgettable man, David.
I´ve known David almost all of my life. When I was a child, I didn´t quite get him. David would always come to the beach with all the kids. David being the avid swimmer, and I a not so good swimmer, was afraid to swim to the dock at Pine Point. David, determined and I horrified, encouraged me to swim all the way to the dock . It was so hard for me and I was upset but at the end of the day I was proud to say I did it! I did it because David believed I could. As I grew older I came to understand what a deeply caring man he was. When David would say to me "now Jonnie Rose tell me about this or that" I knew Mary kept him up to speed and he knew about my life and genuinely cared. He was always so happy to see me. I will miss you David Smoyer! See you on the other side!

So sorry to hear of Dave's passing. He had a great sense of humor and I always enjoyed talking with him either by phone or in person. I'm very glad I got to see him and Mary in Portland several times while they were visiting their daughter Laura and her family. He will be missed.

My condolences to the Smoyer Family.

Dave was my soccer coach at Roxbury Latin for 3 years. I made the team his first year at RL when I was in the third class (sophomore to the rest of the world). He was a great coach (although the teams were below .500); but more importantly a mentor both on the field & in the RL halls.

He continued to have advice for me whenever I ran into him (often at some game & the most recently at Mass Historical Society for a talk on the 100th anniversary of Babe Ruth's sale to the Yankees.)

I will miss him and miss looking for him at Sox games and Columbia games. I will think of him every time I pass Jamaica Pond.

He was a great & kind man.

Dear Mary and the entire Smoyer family,

Ellen and I were so very sorry to hear of the loss of Dave. He was a great friend to us and to me, especially. I knew Dave for about 50 years - dating back to my years as a student at Roxbury Latin when he first arrived at the school. Dave was a great role model - smart, athletic, competitive and idealistic, he cared about us and pushed us to be our best.

He was about the most direct person I have ever known - you always knew where you stood with Dave. As an adolescent it took me a while to understand this - but as our friendship grew into my adulthood, I realized just how wonderful a friend Dave was. He was the type of person you absolutely need as a friend - someone who tells you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. Whenever he wanted to emphasize a point or make sure I was firmly grounded in reality, Dave would address me by my last name with an unmistakably loud voice "... Giarla ... ! he would begin." Dave always had my back and he had my best interest at heart. His encouragement and his challenges to me all came from a loving and caring place.

I really enjoyed working closely with Dave when I chaired the Roxbury Latin Annual Fund in the early 90s and we enjoyed a nice partnership. During that time, Dave and Mary shared their house with Ellen and me on a number of occasions. Upon staying with them, we discovered early one cold autumn morning that, no matter the temperature, Dave didn´t turn the heat on until some unspecified (later) date in October!

Dave and I shared a love for baseball and the RedSox. I attended 49 games in 1971 when I was 13 years old, mostly by myself, and spent an average of about $2 a ticket. Always the competitor, not to be outdone, it seems that Dave´s per game price in 2004 was far less than what I paid in 1974 after adjusting for just about any factor ... the CPI, the increase in face value of tickets or (and especially) the resale/market value of RedSox tickets.

He and I also enjoyed biking in and around Boston (although we never did this together) and I believe we were the only two people brave (or crazy) enough to bike on the Jamaicaway. If I am wrong and he chose not to, that provides definitive proof that Dave was, indeed, smarter than me!

Dave, when you go for a bike ride with Bill Walton, please give the big redhead my regards.

Rest in peace, dear friend.

David knew how to have a great conversation and he knew how to enjoy life. I remember talking to him about the trips he had taken, especially those with his grandchildren, and about the minutiae of my life. He asked lots of questions and really engaged. Such fond memories. David also had a wonderful, welcoming smile. I´m so glad to have known him. Peace and love to the whole Smoyer family
