Joan, We miss you every day. I can't believe that it's been 7.5 years that you've been gone. I have the newspaper articles from your untimely death hanging in my classroom, right above the beautiful picture of you and Andrea from her junior prom. My students ask all the time who you are, and I proudly say that you were going to be my brother-in-law but you gave everything for our freedom. May you continue to watch over our family and your own.
Lots of Love!!!

Joan,
I miss running track with you - it's one of my best memories from high school. You were always the last to run the baton in the 4x4 Relay, that's because you were our Superman, our anchor, our strongest and our quickest. You never gave up, and always ignored the pain, striving for the best. You were the one that always brought it home across the finish line when we won our medals. I never thought you'd win medals for the ultimate sacrifice. You are missed.

Sgt. Duran will never be forgotten -
The Broken Chain
“No one knew that morning that God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
you did not go alone;
for part of us went with you that day when God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories,
your love is still our guide,
and though we cannot see you,
you are always by our side.
Our family chain is broken
and nothing seems the same,
but as God calls us one by one,
the chain will link again.”

Joan, We all awoke today thinking of you and how your presents in our lives have changed us all forever. The guidance and love you have given Andrea has sent her on a course for great things. Last year today, our biggest fear came true and we as a family were forced to join a club that we never wanted to join. You will remain in our hearts and part of our family forever. Thank you for being you all you brought to our lives and your service to our country.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Joan, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Dear Duran Family,
I'm sorry for your lost. I worked on the same base as Joan. I was present at the time of the tragedy by chance. I will always remember Joan for being a funny guy. When he would come to my work area I would tease him about the heat and how we all needed an R&R. He would roll his eyes and laugh with a smirk. On another note I have a piece of personal effects of Joans. A knife he was carrying at the time of the accident. It was left in my truck during the confusion. If any close relatives would like they could email me with details of a shipping address. Sorry for your loss...

My family received a flag this Memorial Day at church. Each flag had the name of a member of the armed forces who had lost their life in one of our country's wars. Our flag had the name Joan J. Duran. He is and will be a hero to our family and we are proud to fly our flag in his honor.

I ran with Joan for three years at Latin and I have not met anyone since with such incredible willpower. Every single damn race he would wait for the gun to sound the last lap, then Joan would step off the track and Superman took his place. I lost count of how many guys he took down with sheer force of will, in a sport where all too often it boils down to who can take more pain before giving in. The entire team would erupt and scream his name, we would lose our freaking minds and you could tell he fed off it. He was our hero when we were still too young and naive to know what the word really meant, and he is one again, in the noblest sense of the word. I think he was brought into our lives maybe just for that reason. For that he will always be my inspiration until the day I can longer put one foot in front of the other.
You were the first of us and the strongest, our memories may dim but we will never forget. I know we will make you and Chris proud.

Hey, everyone! I think I might have known Duran. I'm not sure. The reason I shoutout is because I am also a fellow Dominicano bred in JP. I lived there for all my life, pretty much, and I was blessed to have known and grown up around a lot of peoplez. For the record, I am also an OIF III vet and now in the Kansas Guard since I got out of Active duty. Just to give out a quick intro.
I am very overcome w/ sadness to know that another fellow compatriota has fallen. I know what it's like to lose a fellow soldier and friends as well as a loved one. My (step) daughter's father was killed in '05 in a humvee accident (SSG Donald Furman) and my friend was murdered by an IED months before (SPC Colby Farnan)--just as my former unit touched boots on ground.
I'm not here to add to your grief. Instead, to identify with it and to also let you know that he indeed flew home to Our Maker. I also want to help bring some comfort in the midst of such tragedy. Hopefully we can stay in touch to strengthen and comfort one another in unison.
Until then, Godspeed Superman! HOOAH!

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Please know how Deeply Sorry I am, for the loss of Staff Sgt. Joan J. Duran. As a parent, who has lost a daughter suddenly and having lost a brother to war...I am aware of the deep and devastating pain that you are experiencing. The overwhelming heartache, seems to surface through our shock, as the time passes. Please hang on to your Faith and know that you will get through this.
May the memories of your Brave Young Heroine, remain in your heart always and give you strength through the difficult days ahead, and may Joan Rest Safely now, in the Loving Care of God and know that she Will Never Be Forgotten.
I pray that the Peace of God will be with the Duran family.
I am the sister, of such a young Hero, who made the Ultimate Sacrifice in Vietnam, many years ago.
"Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee."

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May you find comfort in the loving embrace of our Heavenly Father.
