JOAN STRASSMANN Obituary

Strassmann, Joan Irene (Barrett) Of Belmont, 81, on November 15, 2015. Born and raised in Somerville. Daughter of the late Joseph F. Barrett and the late Elvira F.Viveiros, and sister of the late Irene, James, Edward and Robert Burton and the late Joseph Barrett. Survived by her siblings William, John, Gerald, Eugene and Ruth Barrett. Wife of Fred P. Strassmann and mother of Mark of Atlanta, GA., Franz of Belmont and Hull, Alison (Borelli) of Belmont and Miranda (Jones) of Wayland. Grandmother of Christina, Vincent, John and Nicholas Borelli; Carolyn, Robert and Michael Jones; and Aidan and Wyatt Strassmann. Mother-in-law of Cinnamon Strassmann, John A. Borelli and Robert R. Jones. Aunt and great-aunt of many nieces and nephews. A graduate of Somerville High School ('52), Joan attended Sargent College. While raising her four small children, she earned her Bachelor's degree from Harvard University ('66). Joan's gifts were striking and varied. She danced with the Bobby Clark troupe in 1956 and sang in Boston nightclubs. An exceptional athlete, she excelled at swimming, basketball, baseball and her first love, tennis. In the 1970's, she was ranked in the top 10 in New England tennis in both singles and doubles and was at one point ranked 41st nationally on grass courts. She taught tennis and fitness for many years for the town of Belmont, worked as the tennis pro at Oakley Country Club, and served as Chairman of the Dorothy Bruno Hills Tennis League. She belonged to the Belmont Tennis Club for over forty years. She also had a natural ear for languages and spoke French, German, Italian, Japanese and Mandarin. She was an avid bridge player and never met a crossword puzzle she couldn't master. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in her memory to Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan St. Suite 102B, Danvers, MA 01923 which provided hospice care and comfort to her and her family. A Remembrance celebration will be held at a later date.
