JOHN GOLDSMITH Obituary

GOLDSMITH, John H. Of Swampscott, Massachusetts, died at the age of 75 on September 16 from the ravages of Alzheimer's disease. John was the son of Bertram M. and Fanny N. Goldsmith of New York City and Annandale, New Jersey. He began his education with his brother Peter (d. 2011) in a two-room schoolhouse in Clinton, New Jersey, attended Solebury School in New Hope, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1963. During his senior year at Penn, he worked on the municipal bond desk at Hemphill, Noyes, which marked the beginning of a long and productive career in the securities business. Following a stint at L.F. Rothschild, in 1971 John moved to Prescott, Ball & Turben, a regional brokerage firm based in Cleveland, OH, where he would become managing partner, and then President and CEO. He had a passion for serving the client and overcoming regulatory obstacles to do it. His creation in the early 1970's of one of the country's first money market funds as well as several fixed maturity bond funds were examples of his creativity. The ownership of these products in a cooperative structure with other regional firms was unique and unsurpassed at the time. In 1987, John became Chairman and CEO of the Boston regional firm Tucker, Anthony, where he would remain until 2003, after successfully negotiating the sale of the firm to RBC Dain Rauscher. For the next decade, John worked as a consultant and angel investor, nurturing young entrepreneurs, advising them on how to grow, scale and finance their businesses. Deeply respected by his peers, John served on many boards and commissions over his long career, notably as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston. John leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Alice (Spalding), a daughter Jill and her husband Scott Sullivan, and three grandchildren: Brian, Lizzy and Alice Sullivan. John and Alice's son Brian died in 1981. Memorial Service to be held on Thursday, September 29 at 11 AM at Old North Church, 35 Washington Street, Marblehead, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's memory to the Salem State Foundation/Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (CHGS) 352 Lafayette Street, Salem MA 01970.

Alice, Jill, and all John's family members, I wanted to offer my sincere condolences on your loss. I very much enjoyed getting to know John over the years through Scott, Jill, and their family both in Boston and the fun times had at Lago Mar in Florida. I am deeply saddened by this devastating news and will be keeping John and his family in my prayers. We lost a good man (and pilot) way too early.

Dear Alice and Family,
John was an amazing man with a wonderful heart. Though very good at business, he was best at people. He knew the best things in life aren't things. I am grateful for his mentorship and will miss him dearly.

So very, very saddened to hear this news. My
Heartfelt condolences go to johns entire family , especially his wife Alice, daughter Jill, son in law scott and my godson brian. Although, there are few reasons I think I could ever find to break out of my hermetic existence, being there Thursday is absolutely one of them. Unfortunately, having just had my hip replaced I don't think I will be capable of doing so. I will be crying with you all everytime I think of john, however. Odd, how these things work, but I am totally deveststed to have heard of Johns passing. I really loved him. He was very important my life.

I worked for him for 5 plus years. He yelled at me almost everyday. I loved every minute of it and learned a ton. To his family I am sorry for your loss because I'm sure I only feel a portion of it but I feel it a lot. John was a one of a kind and I am grateful I was able to spend that time with such a guy.
