I had some great memories working for you and Charlie Confalone, I went from the kitchen to the valet parking pretty quick, it was 1968 -1969. I recall the remodel of the large dining room upstairs and the attention to detail you had. I also enjoyed your very colorful friends that would visit The Ship. I still remember driving your 1969 Lincoln 4 door through the snow!

We remember the happy days for John here in Ogunquit. He was a friend and neighbor. He loved his home and had a marvelous sense of style. He had great talent for design and his home was a reflection of his exceptional taste.
John was fun to be with and had an irreverent sense of humor. And he was a generous man.
We enjoyed John's friendship and we will miss him.

Thank you John for the inspiration in my life. In my young days working for you for several years at The Ship. You were like a second father to me. You will always be in my thoughts. RIP now along with Billy.

I will always remember as a young boy stopping by Ship's Haven Restaurant and watching how John transformed it into the success it was as The Ship. And to the Zappala family, some of whom I have known well for many years, my thoughts are with you.

Dear John,
I'll miss our dinners and a movie nights, our laughing fits and little fights, sharing a drink and what you think...your sense of style, the devilish smile, but most of all I'll miss sitting with you by the pool on days like this!
Rest in Peace,
John

John was a creative entrepreneur. Eating at the Ship was a treat because he managed it so well, and found time to sit with guests or delight us with his jazz piano. He was also a superb interior decorator, furnishing a variety of living spaces. His designs were breath-taking, each different, but all exquisite and serene.
