Sadness but l remember so well. I worked in their household for 25 years, watching the boys grow up. Martin is truly the gentle giant. He expressed life magnanimously and loves his dear family so. Fond memories of all and the energetic dog Lulu. Quite a character! Be well Charlie, Marty, and families. All the kids must be darling! Debby ...... I remember well. Martin was a memorable and remarkable love for your family.

My deepest sympathy to all of Martin's family. A dear friend, kind, gentle, supporting, fun, honest, wonderful sense of humor... his belief and support of SCA and for all it stand, his help and understanding through the many years ---- I will never forget him and feel so fortunate to have known him. I can only imagine how much you, his family, miss him.
My deepest sympathy. Liz Putnam

I was sorry to hear the sad news about Marty. Such a fine person and unique character. I really enjoyed knowing him.
In class, who can forget the many times his looking critically over those heavy eyelids. a thin smile and delivering a cogent, creatively sarcastic or humorous retort, sending some taken aback, withering in their seats or laughing!
One of a kind.
My sincerest condolences to Deborah, his sons and his extended family.

Twinkling sense of humour, shrewd attention to markets, like the best fund managers - a close interest in history; fun with motor cars (years of amusement over cars displayed in the RAC Pall Mall) and a connoisseur of martinis; a strong, perceptive, enquiring, challenging, original thinking board member; a lovely man with a lovely wife and family - to whom much love from here.
The photo below was taken, sadly, on the day he died. He would have relished this 1905 25.4 litre V8 Darracq which did 109.65mph on the public road from Arles to Salon and then, in Florida, exceeded 2 miles in one minute at 122mph. It is in racing condition today - Martin behind the wheel, Debby alongside (perhaps!).

I was mr hales personal secretary from 1976 to 1981 at Putnam. Went through the ranks of fund manager to executive vp and on to president. It was an honor working with him. Brilliant and yes witty. He so respected his team or teams within the company. He will be greatly missed by all his many associates throughout his career
