NATHAN FALES Obituary

FALES, Nathan Mason "Nate" 88, of East Dennis, and former longtime resident of Westwood passed away, on June, 19th, 2016, surrounded by family. He was born in Providence, RI on Dec. 8, 1927, to the late Henry Hammett and Louise Catherine Fales. Nate graduated from Moses Brown prep school, where he excelled in both football and track and field. He then entered the Navy at Norfolk Naval Air Station and was scheduled for flight school, but was discharged in 1946 at the end of WW II. He attended MIT from 1946-1950, where he was an active member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. While attending college he met his future wife, Carol McCown, on a blind date. He put his engineering degree to work for Babcock & Wilcox, Pump Equipment and Engineering Company, Arthur D. Little, and Harding & Gross. In 1969 he formed his own company N. M. Fales Inc., a distributor and manufacturers' representative for pump and control systems. His wife and, subsequently, his son, also an engineer, joined him in the business. Nate was a very competitive and driven man. He felt a deep connection to the sea. In his younger years, he enjoyed sailing, big band music, and playing the clarinet. In his later years he also stayed active by playing tennis. Of all of the things he loved most, his house on the Cape and time spent there was his favorite, since the time he built the family home in 1964. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 64 years, Carol. Together, they had three children: Karen Sauter of Malvern, PA; Arthur Fales of East Dennis, and the late Janis Marvel who predeceased him in 1992. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Sarah Marvel of Concord, NC; Nathan Marvel of Center Conway, NH; Trace Sauter of Charlotte, NC; Alec Fales of Sarasota, FL, and a great grandson, Tristin Marvel of Center Conway, NH. A memorial service will be held at sea at a later date. In lieu of memorials, the family asks that donations are made in his name to the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History.

Not sure what to say?

At the start of time man has looked to the sea. Today we look to a man who asked to go back to the sea. With the same outlook he lived his life strong and honest never asking why or why not. Never faulting from his losses only finding his own future. Seeing the potential of his own dreams for his family's sake. I will remember the man I called grampa - a man that showed me moving forward was a part of life never letting me not feel my feelings only increasing my mind and souls ability to find my path telling me to be me and be proud. To him I say trim your sails, point east and find your bearings, hoping for the hug of the lost and answer the cry of the AllFather.

Our family is like the ocean,
it takes and gives like the tides,
unbreakable like the Jetty,
waves that gather and crash,
while beneath the surface all is calm.
It is a wondrous place,
with caverns so deep that they
have never before been seen.
There, you will find my love for you,
my admiration, my respect,
and my hope that you knew
what an impact you had on my life.

I love you, Grandpa

Art, many moons ago, you and I were co-workers @ Industrial Water. I remember your dad very well, especially when he made his frequent A/P phone calls! He was such a pleasure to speak with and he always had a "proud dad" comment to sneak in where you were concerned.

Condolences on the loss of your dad.
