Hewitt, Peter Peter Meldrim Hewitt, former Westwood/Cambridge resident, died in Peterborough, N.H. on February 15, 2014. Mr. Hewitt's tall, lean figure might have been a textbook image of a New England Yankee, but behind the Yankee exterior beat the heart of a jazz musician. One friend called him "a walking encyclopedia of jazz in a Brooks Brothers suit." Besides his musical gifts, Mr. Hewitt was known for his warmth, humor, unfailing kindness, and integrity. Peter Hewitt was born in Boston on June 14, 1926 to Erastus Henry Hewitt, a lawyer, and the former Jane Meldrim of Savannah, Georgia. The family lived in Cambridge, Mass., where Peter graduated from Browne & Nichols School in 1944. Admitted to Harvard, he first made a detour into the armed services where he played "combat piano" in the 558th Army Air Force Band, part of the occupation forces on Okinawa. He graduated from Harvard in the Class of 1950, then entered the machine tool industry, ultimately joining Brown & Sharpe in Providence, R.I. In 1969, he moved to the trusts and estates department of Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank (now Bank of America). In 1985, Mr. Hewitt retired to Dublin, N.H., where he worked part-time for the Northfield Mount Hermon School as Director of Planned Giving. A deep believer in the value of community, he was long an active member of the Dublin Community Church. In 2004, he moved into the Rivermead retirement home in Peterborough. Peter Hewitt was a devoted and beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was predeceased by his first wife, Luan Schoepf Hewitt, and his second wife, Mary Stewart Hewitt. He is survived by his sister Jane Hewitt Tierney, daughters Susan Hill Hewitt, Emily Hewitt Rhinelander, Caroline Meldrim Hewitt; six grandchildren, and his companion and dear friend at Rivermead, Susanne Holcombe. A memorial service in his honor will be held at the Dublin Community Church at 11:00 AM on March 22, 2014. Just learned of Peter's passing today when my annual Christmas card was returned. Peter and I were dear if intermittent friends who worked together at Northfield Mount Hermon School and golfed at the Dublin (NH) Golf Club. He played piano in his inimitable style at my wedding in 1993. Rest in Peace, Peter.

As a friend of Peter and his wife Lulu, I would like to connect with Peter's daughter, Susan. As a Canadian student at the University of Michigan's College of Engineering, I got a summer job with Browne & Sharpes newly acquired Double "A" Products.

I first met Peter in Ann Arbor Michigan where he live while he was CFO of Double A.
My then wife and I had our first child, Heather. Peter and LULU had a baby too, Susan. Another ear friend France Hayes of blessed memory also had a baby boy, Mark.
All three babies played, and we had a wonderful and ever so memorable American Thanksgiving. It was my fist...1960
I have called Peter every year sinc, and was sadenned this year to learn of his passing.

Peter & I worked on the same unit @ RIHT in Personal Trust Administration during the 1980's. Peter was a true gentleman and was liked by everyone @ RIHT !! While I haven't seen him since he retired, we were friends and worked closely together back then. My condolences to his family and friends - he will be missed
