Richard CHALFIN Obituary

CHALFIN, Richard Manster October 23, 1946 - October 3, 2024

With sorrowful hearts, we announce the death of Richard Chalfin, who passed peacefully on the sacred day of Rosh Hashanah, surrounded by his loving family in Boston, Massachusetts. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Richard was the cherished son of Paul Manster Chalfin, Peggy Oppenheimer Chalfin and his stepmother, Ruth Schafer Chalfin. He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Joyce Amoroso Chalfin; and his children, Robin, Jacob and Julia and their spouses, Krista, Kathleen and Christoph, who all proudly took the Chalfin name. He was the adoring grandfather of five, Ella, Aria, Otto, Angus and Margaret. He cherished his extended family, including cousin, Joan Tannenbaum; brother, Stuart; sister, Carol Liebman; sisters-in-law, Lois Greenfield, Angela Ordoñez and Naomi Persky; and a gaggle of nieces and nephews. Richard's diverse and blended family was the center of his universe; he carefully tended to his children's unique pursuits and delighted in the holiday traditions, holding extended family and all the generations close to his heart.

From his youth in the back-to-the-land movement in West Virginia and the Berkshires, through raising family in Kimberton, to grandparenting in Boston and Munich, Richard cultivated a life rooted in community and nature. Wherever he lived, Richard grew a beautiful garden, literally and figuratively. Always a lover of the arts, one of the sweetest pleasures in his last chapter was making pottery with his wife. His legacy of joy, curiosity and community service will be carried in the hearts of all who knew him. My memory of him was from our spiritual community in the Berkshires. He was a part of our Men´s Caravan for years. His loving heart was evidenced by his spiritual name, Habib. I will miss you, brother.

Your smile started with your mouth but really came out in your eyes. And when something needed doin´ there was always that look of determination `til it got done, and then the smile was back. Thanx for so much, man. Happy Trails.

My memories of Richard are from his time in West Virginia. E was committed to gardening and I was lucky enough to work with him on our communal garden. I attribute a lot of my love of gardening to him.
I´m happy that it´s something that he continued to do his whole life. Sending love to Robin and my sympathies to the family

With deep sadness we receive the news of Richard's passing. Our families shared many wonderful memories from our years at the Waldorf school and from enjoying Joyce's presence at the birth of our son Robin. In one of our photo albums we have a precious photo of Julia and son Ezra walking hand in hand as 3-4 year old's in our back yard .We remember fondly Richard's contributions to our community.
