Richard Fontaine Obituary

FONTAINE, Richard A. It is with profound sadness that family and friends mourn the passing of Richard A. Fontaine of Plympton who died unexpectedly on Saturday, December18th. Rick was born in Worcester and was the son of the late Roland and Lillian (O'Leary) Fontaine. He and his wife Carolyn raised their son in Bridgewater before moving to Plympton in 1996. Richard graduated summa cum laude from Bridgewater State College. He did his graduate work at Boston University with a MAS in Computer Science and Information Systems. He completed the Management Development Program at Harvard University and the Director's Program at CAUSE Management Institute. He was Director of Information Services and CIO at Bridgewater State College; CIO and Executive Director for Information Technology at Community College of Rhode Island and most recently Vice President for Information Technology and CIO at Wentworth Institute of Technology. He lectured at University of Massachusetts, Bridgewater State University and Boston State College. Richard loved golf, running, and spending as much time as possible with his grandchildren. Richard was the loving husband of Carolyn (Greenwood) Fontaine of Plympton, loving father of Richard A. Fontaine and his wife Elizabeth of Halifax and proud grandfather of Sarah and Owen; loving brother of Caryl D. Boire of Kingston, Linda Nordstrom of Worcester, Michelle Chase of Oxford, Denise Y. Fontaine of Worcester, and the late Edward and Wayne Fontaine. Richard is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. His professional legacy is that of an exceptional person who was a strong leader with a kind heart and a wonderful sense of humor, but this pales in importance to his personal legacy of being of a larger than life father, grandfather and husband and his kindness and consideration to all he met. His spirit will live on through the many people that he touched. Funeral from the Prophett-Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 98 Bedford St., BRIDGEWATER, on Thursday. December 23 at 8 am. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Basil's Chapel, Bridgewater State College at 9 am followed by a burial at Hillcrest Cemetery, Plympton. Visitation will be held on Wednesday. from 4-8pm. Donations in Richard's memory may be sent to Halifax Youth Baseball, P.O. Box 343, Halifax, MA 02338. My wife took the train into Boston for the last 3 years with Rick. She spoke often of the two "Wentworth Boys, how they were such gentlemen. Rick's sense of humor and enthusiasm were mentioned often. His jokes and kind remarks made an often bad commute bearable. He must have been an amazing man, husband, father, and teacher to make such a lasting impression on such casual acquaintances.

Dear Fontaine Famaily,
I studied computer science at Bridgewater 30 years ago and was in a couple of Dick's classes. I was always amazed at his energy, enthusiasm and willingness to go all out to help his students. We all wondered how one man could do so much.

I learned a lot from Dick about how to think, plan and approach my work, even if it didn't involve a computer. He was a great teacher.

I just heard about Dick's passing. It's hard to believe - someone so very alive and energetic. I'll always remember him as a good friend and tennis partner, a very knowledgeable colleague, and a guy who could eat more than anyone I knew yet never gain weight.
Richie (Jr.), my sincere condolences to you and your family.

Dear Carolyn and Family,

As a colleague of Rick's I was one of the many individuals who benefited from his leadership, vision and friendship. He will always be remembered for his kind heart and great sense of humor, as you stated. Rick was a leader of our organization, OSHEAN, from the very start and his support helped make us a successful organization. He will be dearly missed.

On behalf of the entire OSHEAN family, please accept our deepest sympathies and know you will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Rick was a great guy. I got to know him when he worked at CCRI. We collaborated on projects with URI, RIC and OSHEAN. He had a great sense of humor, was very smart yet unassuming, and was enjoyable to work with. Above all, Rick was very kind. My thoughts and prayers are with Rick and his family.

I will miss Rick, for the leadership and vision he had for the Team at Wentworth. Rick was proud of his accomplishment to assemble a strong team of talented, capable folks to build upon his vision of keeping WIT in the forefront of addressing challenges before they became issues.

He was known to have a keen sense of humor which was pervasive to whatever serious matters with which he was involved.

With deep regards to his family and many friends at Wentworth,
Bob Smith - Velaris

My name is Jo Anne M. Robitaille. I had the privilege of knowing Richie Rich (that's the nickname I gave him). He was and still is a close friend to Al Sevigny. I was Al's secretary. Richie Rich had a great heart and was very generous. I was sadden to hear about his passing. I will always remember him. My heart goes out to his family.
