WILLIAM O'CONNELL Obituary

O'CONNELL, William S. Died peacefully in Naples, Florida on February 25th, after a brief but valiant battle with Cancer. He was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts on June 28, 1931, and married on February 24, 1952 to Carolyn Herget of Kingston, Massachusetts. He and his family lived in several Massachusetts towns (Framingham, Cohasset, Scituate, Norwell, and Duxbury); before he and his wife retired to N. Ft. Myers, Florida in 1996. He will be remembered for his passion and knowledge of music (especially Jazz & Blues) that was ever present in his years working as a Disc Jockey in both his hometown of Plymouth, MA and later in Boston. The highlight of his career was working as a television sportscaster for channels 5, 7, and 56 in Boston for nearly three decades. For many years, he also hosted the popular "Candlepin Super Bowl" TV bowling show in Boston. An avid photographer, lover of travel, history, music, nature, and birds of all types; he loved roaming beaches and trails in search of shells, treasures, and shorebirds. He enjoyed spending time with his wife and family on the island of Martha's Vineyard, and taking long car rides to undisclosed destinations. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Carolyn (Herget); son, Matthew S. O'Connell & his wife Linda; daughter, Deidre A. Diodati & her husband Henry; his 6 grandchildren Alec & Andrea O'Connell, and Joseph, Nicholas, Lucas, and Lylah Diodati; and his devoted Bassett Hound, Sadie. A great memory...Bill and I at our first radio job, WBET in Brocton..broadcasting all night..."New Year's Eve with Tom and Bill"...an all request show with our hard working wives seeking out and handing us the records. That was 1954..Bill and I worked together frequently over the years..and laughed over that show a thousand times...He was a great guy and a pleasure to be with....our thoughts are with his wonderful family. A great and distant memory...Bill and I at our first radio station, WBET, Brocton.."New Years Eve with Tom and Bill"..We took requests and broadcast all night as our wives searched out and handed us the records.. Whenever I met with Bill after that we would laugh and reminisce about it. That...was New Years 1954. I worked with Bill many times over the years... A lot of memories of a wonderful guy.

Bill O'Connell was a good man. He was really nice to me when I was a young man growing up. My brother Michael worked with Mr. O'Connell at Channel 5 and I met him at the station. He took the time to talk to me and made me feel important. His attention made a strong impression on me because my dad had died recently and I was in real need of encouragement. Mr. O'Connell came to several of our family gatherings along with John Henning and that made us all feel special. Later when I worked on Martha's Vineyard a as waiter he stopped by and made a special effort to tell my boss how great our family was. I was so proud. My prayers are with you all as you mourn the loss of a great man. God just added a first round pick to his team of angels in heaven.

I am a native of Boston and retired to North Fort Myers in 2004. I joined our Pine Lakes Bowling Assoc. and saw a man that I thought looked familiar. I had the chance to view his name and saw it was Bill O'Connell. I immediately remembered him as a sportscaster on the local Boston channels. I did talk to him about Boston and he only bowled one year after that. I would see him driving his dog around in the golf cart a few times after that. My condolences to Carolyn and their family.

I always felt excited and thrilled as a child during the early seventies knowing our family was heading over to Bill's home for dinner and fun times. I looked up to him because he was so interesting and adventurous and also my dad's best friend. I admired his spirit of the wild, and his example of all around professionalism. Billy had a gentle old school soul full of integrity and passion for family and friends and the great outdoors. Such a cool guy who will be greatly missed but remembered forever. Rest Billy.

Bill -I know my Dad is there to meet you ...as a young girl you took beautiful pictures and landed me my first modeling job...even though that was short lived you were always an Uncle to me. I have such fond memories of all of us on the Vineyard. I remember one particular time when I so much wanted a dog and you comforted me totally understanding my hearts desire. I will forever remember your twinkling eyes and large smile I love you and you will always have my heart

I love you Daddy ... You were always my HERO and in the end, I never felt closer to you. It has been my honor and privilege to be raised as your daughter ... and even though we did not share any genes, we were alike in spirit and personality ... some even said in looks. I will forever see you in the sky and in the Sea ... a soaring bird, a crashing wave, a shell or a stone on the shore ... and always in my heart. XXXOOO
