ZIVA PALEY Obituary

PALEY, Ziva Ziva Reuveny Paley died at home in her sleep in the early hours of January 17 after a six-year battle with pancreatic cancer. She was a force of nature. A proud kibbutznik and officer in the Israeli army, Ziva moved to the US to complete her PhD in biochemistry at Michigan State University, barely able to speak English. A scientist and professor, she was passionate about politics, social justice, and making the world a better place. At a Young Jewish Professionals meeting, she met Joseph "Jack" William Paley, whom she married in 1980. They decided to stay in the United States and build a life, family, and community in Boston. Grateful to those who welcomed her to this country, Ziva made it her mission to provide that same generosity to others and to welcome many, many strangers and friends into her home. She leaves behind so many people who loved her beyond measure, including her husband, Jack; her son, Amit Reuveny Paley, and his husband, Jonathan David Naymark; her daughter, Shimrit Paley Markette, and her husband, Joshua Lee Markette; her grandchildren, Avi and Tova Markette; her siblings, Amir Reouveny, Hedva Melamud, and Arik Reuveni; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Graveside service were held at Mishkan Tefila Memorial Park. Ziva was fierce and unrelenting in her love for her family, her friends, Judaism, and everyone who was lucky enough to be a part of her story. She radiated warmth and energy and love. We hope to carry her light and legacy forward and continue to make her proud.

I met Ziva when I worked at MIT and we became good friends. I've lived in many places since Boston and woke up thinking of her this morning. I was saddened to learn of her passing and send my condolences to Jack and her family.

I was just notified that we've lost Ziva - a powerful force, indeed! I had the privilege to be one of her doctors (Gynecology) for many years, and always enjoyed our animated conversations about many medical and social topics, particularly relating to menopausal changes, weight management, and hormones. She did so amazingly well initially in her battle with this disease - augmented by her great determination and energy. My sympathy extends to her husband and family -- Ziva was very kind and thoughtful to me when I lost my husband in 2013. I was very sad and moved to hear of her loss. I will not forget her !!
