Alma VanWormer Obituary

Alma P. VanWormer 1918 - 2008 SPOFFORD, NH Alma P. VanWormer, 90, of Hewitt Road, Spofford, N.H., died Dec. 28, 2008 with her family at her side, at the Cheshire Medical Center, Dartmouth Hitchcock, Keene, N.H., following a brief illness. She was born in Abington, Conn., Feb. 7, 1918, daughter of Alfred H. and Katherine Weidlich Paine. She grew up in Brattleboro, Vt., graduating from Brattleboro Union High School and attended Brattleboro Business Institute. Mrs. VanWormer worked with the former American Optical Company of Brattleboro and later for 16 years with Holstein Association of Brattleboro, retiring in 1982. A resident of Chesterfield, N.H., for many years, Mrs. VanWormer was a member of the Chesterfield Library and the Chesterfield Historical Society. She was also a trustee of the trust funds for the Chesterfield Cemetery Association. For many years, she worked as a supervisor of the checklist at the Chesterfield Town Hall during elections. Mrs. VanWormer enjoyed gardening, and was an accomplished artist who created many pen and ink drawings for her family and friends. Her most important pastime and enjoyment in life was that of her devotion to and love of her family. She leaves a daughter, Betsey A. "Skippy" Emery, and her husband, Cliff of Spofford, N.H., two grandchildren; Kathy Gorey, and her husband, Chris of Greenfield, Mass., Donald Emery, and his wife, Karen of Spofford, N.H., five great-grandchildren; Jenny Chase, Bobby Chase, Thomas Gorey, Jaidyn Emery, Travis Emery, and two great-great-grandchildren; Jesse and Ethan. She also leaves a brother, Warren Green, and his wife, Marion of Brattleboro, Vt., three sisters; Katherine LaPalme of West Dummerston, Vt., Fannie Speno, and her husband, Matt of Brattleboro, Vt., and Viola Williams, and her husband, Glen of Centralia, Wash. Her husband, Frank A. Van Wormer, whom she married on April 15, 1943 in Brattleboro, Vt., died July 4, 1989. She was predeceased by a son, John M. VanWormer, two brothers; John Paine and George Green, and a sister Wilhelmina P. Andrews. FUNERAL NOTICE: A graveside service will be held in the spring in the Freidsam Cemetery, Chesterfield. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, donations may be made in Mrs. VanWormer's memory to the Spofford Fire and Rescue Department, PO Box 136, Spofford, NH 03462.
