Edward Gordon Obituary

American Artist Edward Gordon passed away peacefully on December 18, 2023, at the age of 83 at home surrounded by family in Bellows Falls, Vermont. He was born November 26, 1940, in Ocean City, New Jersey, to his parents, Raymond Edward Gordon and Ruth Gordon.

Edward was a gifted artist and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be deeply missed by his brother Ross Gordon, his sister Dorothy Gordon, his daughters Rachel Caldwell and Leah Gordon, his son-in-laws Tom Weber and David Caldwell, his step daughters Shara Stamler and Sabrina Dalton, his grandchildren John Caldwell, Seamus Kelly, Ember Broomfield, and Mia Broomfield. He was preceded in death by his wife Joa Ruttle, his son Ross 'Butch' Gordon, stepson Django Broomfield, and his brothers Lewis and Robert Gordon.

Edward graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in accounting. He trained in the Navy for a few years and flew jets but left the military just before the Vietnam war began. He went into business with his brother Robert and together they had a successful C.P.A. practice for many years in the Pocono, Pennsylvania area. An avid skier, hiker, and biker, Edward was drawn to colder climates and moved his first wife, Barbara Noonan, and two daughters to the Franconia, NH area in 1973 where he continued to work as an accountant. In 1980 Edward made the bold step to leave his career as a C.P.A. to fulfill a life-long dream of becoming an artist. He had never studied art in college, but loved drawing and after taking a few oil painting lessons he realized it brought him much joy. His early work included landscapes and some architecture in a realistic setting (a genre known as Realism). His paintings were a gift to all who knew him and knew his art. His formidable technique, the smoothness and sheen of his surfaces, and the meticulous detail and ethereal emptiness spoke of a clear and personal vision. Some referred to Edward's work as "Surreal" because many of the scenes he created did not exist in real life. A favorite quote: "My goal is to make paintings so realistic that viewers are drawn into the imagery space and share in the peaceful feeling I try to incorporate into each work."

Not only was Edward a gifted athlete and accomplished artist, he was also a great Father and Husband. Creative, sensitive, loving and just so much fun. In between getting worked up about politics, Edward always set an example of hard work for his daughters. For example, when he to Northern NH, he designed and built a house for his family.

Anyone who was connected to Edward knows how much his work meant to so many people. It brought him great joy to know that people wanted to see his work, buy his work, and collect his work. The world has suffered a significant loss, but we are blessed to have the gift of his art forever.

Edward's memory will forever be cherished by his family and friends who had the pleasure of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, creativity, and perseverance that will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.

My mother spoke so often about Eddie Gordon. I believe this is him in a prom king and queen photo I have of my mom. She passed in 2014 and reaching out was always something I planned to do. Our houses and now mine were and are filled with many of his prints. Always the 39th print and I was always curious about the number (if it had any significance). She was born in 1940 as well, an artist as well, and was raised in Sea Isle City, NJ. I inherited her love for the ocean and especially love those prints. I wish I had looked years ago-would have loved to sit and talk about south Jersey before it became what it is today.

Edward was my step father. He was a wonderful father to me and my family. We had much laughter and love. He and my mother enjoyed many years together. Miss them both.
