Martin "Marty" Lee Van Gundy passed away peacefully at his home in Hamilton, Indiana on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025. Marty was a resilient man with a passion for music, signature sense of humor, and brilliant mind.
Marty was born July 5, 1950, to the late Paul and Edna (Sanders) Van Gundy of Bryan. Marty adored his hometown, where the Van Gundy family was deeply embedded in serving the community. Both Edna and Paul served in local government, with Paul becoming mayor and later a local historian. Marty shared these values and enjoyed acting as the family historian, passing along stories and heirlooms to his nieces.
Marty was an avid music lover and talented guitarist, playing in bands like The Renegade in Santa Fe, New Mexico and frequently visiting Hamilton Lake's Cold Spring Resort for concerts accompanied by his loving caregivers. Marty was also a skilled Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, providing care until an unexpected stroke prevented him from continuing his work.
An artist and engineer at heart, Marty enjoyed applying his creativity to renovating homes with local craftsmen. He transformed the family cabin on Hamilton Lake from a simple cottage to a beautiful log cabin that he loved to share with friends and family. He took great joy in engaging with his community of friends, fellow Bryan alumni and extended family.
Marty was blessed with caregivers who went above and beyond in caring for him. They would bring their spouses, kids and grandkids to visit, treating Marty as an extension of their families. The Van Gundy family would like to thank them for their many years of dedication and compassion: Kim Anderson, Alicia Cool, Chris Brown, Julie Parr, Cherie Badders, Liz Bender, Nisha Schreiber and Marilyn Lowry.
Marty is survived by his brother, Gregory (Lisa) Van Gundy; nieces, Liza (Matthew), Erika (Jorge) and Olivia (Steven) Van Gundy; grand-nephews, Mateo, Robin and Elliott.
Marty is predeceased by his parents, Paul and Edna; and brother, Edwin Van Gundy.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that those planning an expression of sympathy consider memorial contributions to be made to St. Michael the Archangel Parish, 1098 County Road 39, Waterloo, Indiana, 46793.
To honor Marty's wishes, a private celebration of life will take place at Hamilton Lake.
