For Fourteen years I have lived above Alfredo and Leah. People would always ask, skeptically, What is it like living above your landlords?
To be honest, it hasn't always been perfect. There were a few times Alfredo and I had disagreements, whether it might rain or snow the next day. They've fed me too much, and made it so very difficult to pitch in. Alfredo would always say "I need nothing." It was frustrating, he was so generous, but being content was his superpower. He was just so happy, knowing he had the love of his wife, family, and a nice handsome tenant (I swear he said that once). Alfredo was unburdened by the world, hardships were met with a shrug. He had his simple pleasures, and was always quick to laugh and eat. He exuded joy and beamed with love.
I will miss his warm welcoming smile and sincere curiosity in me and how I was doing. I will even miss his delight in spooking me, when he stood quietly waiting for me to come downstairs.
Most of all I will miss his invitations to "come sit" on the sofa, and laugh at gameshow contestants with a pat on the knee. To "come sit" in the garden, and enjoy the evening sun after a long day.
So to answer what it's been like to live above Alfredo and Leah, that invited me into their home and family. It has always been my easiest answer to give. It's been an honor, and the privilege of a lifetime.
Cheers to Alfredo on a life well-lived, love to his friends and family for their loss, and condolences to anyone that didn't get the meet this amazing man.
