ALLEN CRANE Obituary

ALLEN BROOKS CRANE - ST. ALBANS - Allen Brooks Crane, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Aug. 3, 2013. He was born on Jan. 20, 1947, one of nine children, to Dorothy Maude Varney and Orin Crane, in New London, Conn. He spent his younger years on Walt and Lucy Hislop's farm in Cambridge and went to school in Jeffersonville. He continued to work on the Hislop Farm and on the Packard Farm through college and graduated from UVM with a degree in Plant and Soil Science. In 1973, he went to work for Claussen's Greenhouse in Colchester and continued to work there for the next 40 years. A lifelong gardener, he shared his passion for plants, gardening and the outdoors with his sons, passing along fishing advice and gardening tips. After racing motorcycles when younger, he also shared this passion with his sons, thrashing through trails and quarries on dirt bikes. His incredible love for his sons and grandchildren showed in his smile and glow whenever he spent time with them. He inspired his sons to do fantastic things, including exploring the world and becoming wonderful husbands and fathers, as he was. He is survived by his wife, Janice Crane; son, Brian Crane and wife, Heidi, and grandchildren, Eloise and Maxwell; and son, Brooks Crane and wife, Michelle, and grandchild, Preston. A celebration of Allen's life will take place at Claussen's Greenhouse (Colchester) on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, from 2 to 5 p.m. Please visit www.healdfuneralhome.com to leave a memory or a message for the Crane family. In lieu of flowers or gifts, his family is requesting donations to the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, VT 05478; or Vermont Food Bank, 33 Parker Road, Wilson Industrial Park, Barre, VT 05641.

We can't believe it's been 7 years already since you left us all. We all often talk and reminisce about the" Claussen Days" with very fond memories. Thanks for being there always for my boys "Alvin", we miss you...RIP

Dear Jan, Brian and Brooks,

I am so very sorry for your loss. Every time I walk by your onetime home on Main Street, the lush profusion of flowers reminds me that your family once lived there. His legacy lives on, green and growing. May you find comfort and peace.

Allen Crane taught me so much. I worked at Claussens in high school back in the late 70's early 80's. I bought my first car, and Allen Crane taught me how to keep it running! When I ran my go cart into the front of a greenhouse, he helped me fix it, (the cart and the greenhouse) :). I owe almost all of the mechanical aptitude that I possess today to just listening to Allen Crane and everything he taught me. I know a lot of my questions he probably thought were dumb, but he always answered them, and in the process passed his knowledge on to the next generation.. I have passed this knowledge on as well... RIP Allen :)

Jan and Family,
I will always remember the years when we were mixed up teenagers and the time we spent working and admiring Allen's genius as he could fix anything! If we had a problem or question, we went and asked Allen as he pretended to act like he didn't care.....we knew he did. God bless your family as you are in our thoughts and prayers.
