It was five years ago when you tragically passed away. We will never forget the shock and the unbearable sadness of knowing you were gone. As parents, there's no greater loss than the loss of your child. You were the shining star of our lives, our cherished gift from God. You were so unique, thoughtful, and friendly; a compassionate young man with a heart of gold. Your loyalty to friends and your concern for others was respected by everyone who knew you. You brought so much love and joy into our family, and to all of your friends. The world lost an amazing soul on the day you died. We're now left with memories and the heartbreak of losing a son. Still, your Mom and Dad have faith that we'll be together again someday. Until that time comes, we continue to love you and think of you, always.

Dear Matt,
The celebration of your life on January 18th at Talent was amazing! Your mom and dad, Kathy, Hannah, Daniel, all of your friends, and some of their parents were all there. As we all sat around a single, lit candle in a darkened room, a grief counselor gave an important, heartfelt speech. After that, we all shared stories, memories, and feelings our endless love for you. Luke put together a slide show of pictures and a wonderful video of one of your biking adventures at Catamount. We ended the event with a group picture and by releasing balloons into the evening sky; an acknowledgment of your heavenly spirit. You would have been so honored and pleased by all kind words and expressions of love. It certainly felt like you were watching down upon us and I'm very thankful for that! Love you always!

The bike rides, the numerous hangouts with the gang, heck just prom and high school graduation still plays in my mind, and I will miss it all. It breaks my heart that one of our own was taken from us too soon. I will always remember the fun we all had in high school, and I know we will never let memories of Matt fade. We were all just kids but we all had each other's backs, always. He was a person who could never be disliked by anyone. Rest in peace, Matt. We'll all meet up some day and cause some trouble. I remember meeting Matt when I was just a little girl. He used to ride his bike up and down the street until one of us kids in the neighborhood would notice him and join in on the fun…and man, did we have fun. I wouldn't know where to begin when describing the countless adventures that Matt and I shared. From building forts in every corner of my house, bike riding, flash light tag, basketball, and "don't touch the lava", to watching our favorite movie (Signs) repeatedly, and going for long walks where all we wanted was to talk. Matt always knew how to show the sunshine on a rainy day. And as I grew up alongside him, I'm so lucky to have had the pleasure of knowing and loving him. He was a brother to me and I could never express in words the impact that he's had on my life. He was there for me at times when I thought nobody cared and he never failed to offer a warm hug and good cup of laughter. My heart is heavy as I reminisce over the wonderful memories I have of Matt, but am comforted as I remind myself that he is in a better place now. Karen and Gary, I pray that God may give you peace in knowing that your son will be missed, but never forgotten.

I grew up just a few streets away and have so many great memories of hanging out with the neighborhood crew. I will always remember his laugh and the way he smiled when someone told a goofy joke. I remember him wrestling with Rud and being such a good sport. I've never met someone who was as kind as Matt, he never said a negative word! Karin and Gary, I am so sorry for this incredible loss. Please know that he was loved by everyone he met. I will never forget him.

I'll never forget the day I met Matt. I was seven years old, and was biking over in the "new condos" (at the time) when I saw him playing with Matchbox cars in the street. It was not long after that day before Matt was an integral part our neighborhood crew. I won't forget all the times mountain biking, going to Talent Skatepark, playing cops and robbers, flashlight tag, and playing video games. If I hadn't known Matt, I would have never gotten to see some cool shows at Higher Ground with him and his dad. Matt's taste in music let me discover some of my own passions. Matt had an extremely and overwhelmingly positive impact on everyone he knew! He changed my life! Gary and Karin, please find comfort in knowing that Matt made a difference in my life, and we will all miss him!

Matt was always an amazing friend to me. I remember countless days after school where we would go biking, sledding, or just hang out in the neighborhood. Even as we got older, that never changed.
