Scott Barnes Obituary

Scott Michael Barnes

Age: 49 • North Ferrisburgh

Barnes, Scott Michael, age 49 of North Ferrisburgh, Vermont.

It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Scott, at his home in North Ferrisburgh, on December 27, 2016. A lifelong resident of Quaker St, Scott was born to Larry and Eleanor Barnes in Burlington on July 21, 1967, the eldest of two sons. Scott's passion for farming was developed at an early age on his grandparents' farm in Charlotte. There he was able to make good use of the many talents he inherited from his father: primarily, his keen intellect coupled with a gift for working with his hands. As a child, Scott spent many hours tending to livestock, from this sprouted a passion for raising and showing Polled Hereford cattle. His support of the New England Hereford Association gifted him with many life-long friendships. Some of his greatest achievements were winning Grand Champion Female at The Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, and National Cow Calf Champion at Keystone International in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In 1987, Scott created SMB Custom Landworks, from his home in North Ferrisburgh. As with all things, Scott earned a reputation for integrity, quality workmanship, and professionalism.

In 2003, Scott married the love of his life and childhood friend, Michele Racine. Together they created a cozy home that reflected their shared love of farming, Scott's passion for cattle, and Michele's gift for gardening and decorating. Scott's proudest moment was the birth of his son, Carson, on January 15, 2004. Scott and Carson shared a very special bond. From his days as a goalie for the Rice High School varsity ice hockey team, Scott shared passion for the game and the position with his son, Carson. Whether they were sitting by the fire watching hordes of kids enjoy their frozen pond with a pick-up game or travelling around the country for hockey tournaments, camps, and showcases, ice hockey gave Scott and Michele a myriad of experiences that have created lasting friendships and fond memories.

Scott was a generous man, who always had time to help a friend in need. His loss leaves a gaping hole in the fabric of his family, friends, and greater community. Left to grieve his loss are his wife and soul-mate, Michele, his devoted son, Carson, his mother, Eleanor of South Burlington, his father, Larry of North Ferrisburgh, his brother, Christopher, wife Robin and daughter Lauryn of Condon, Montana, his mother-in-law, Patricia Racine of Clearwater, FL, his father-in-law, Buzz and his wife Peggy of Brandon, brother-in-law Michael Racine of Ferrisburgh, godson, John Mack of Charlotte, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 2, 2017, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 136 Locust Street, Burlington. Corbin & Palmer Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 209 Falls Road, Shelburne, is in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, a fund has been established to assist with the health and welfare of his surviving son, Carson. Please send any donations, payable to the Scott Barnes Memorial Trust, to Angelina Carrara, 19 Ledgemont Lane, Cornwell, VT 05753

Dear Michele, Carson and Mr. & Mrs Barnes,

I am so sorry.

I have so many fond memories of growing up with Scott. He was a genuine friend to both Steve and I - and really to everyone he met. He truly always had our backs. I remember his big personality and smile. He truly lit up the room and he made us all laugh with his great stories in the locker room. We were hockey teammates for many years and it is comforting to hear that he passed along his love of the game to Carson...Someday I'd love to play a game of shinny on your pond in his honor.

My heart, prayers and thoughts go out to you...

My sincere condolences to Scott's family. My family has known Scott since about 2008, when we became "customers" of his landscaping business. Not only did he do a fantastic job of selecting and planting trees and overseeing the annual brush-hogging etc,, but he was just a wonderful, energetic, generous guy--terrific businessman, fair, honest, and funny, always willing to spend a little extra time to catch up and chat about his beloved son, wife, and parents. I am certain that an enormous extended community will miss him terribly.

Surely one of the best men we ever knew, we both loved Scott as he worked with us for years. Dependable, cheerful, and so expert in all he did for us, he became a great friend. We left VT before he married, so never had the pleasure of knowing his family, but Mrs. Barnes, his mother, was always a fine friend, too.

As we worked to establish our business, the Vermont Wildflower Farm, in Charlotte, Scott succeeded in building his. He was the BEST. We and our two sons, Terry and Eric, all have fond memories of Scott, and extend heartfelt sympathies to all his family.

Michelle, Carson, Ellie, Larry, Chris, Pat; I cannot express my deepest sympathy for your family Scott was indeed a wonderful person. When he would come into the post office he would often talk about Carson and what was going on in his world of hockey. He beamed with pride for you,Carson. Michelle you were his everything and that was how it should be with mates. Know that that is the greatest of gifts. Scott was a wonderful neighbor and friend to many and that will be a vacancy in many for a long time to come, but all who knew him will remember very fond memories. Including all of us here at the post office in North Ferrisburgh. If ther is anything I can do for you and your family, please do not hesitate to ask. It shall be done, because that is what Scott would do.

To the family of Scott I send my deepest sympathy! I knew Scott mainly from when we showed beef cattle together at Field Days and participated in the beef 4-H club as youngsters. In later years whenever I ran in to him at the fair, his passion, love and support for his family, cattle and business were clearly evident! Michele and Carson, may you find peace in the coming months and may the Lord hold Scott in a very special place as his work on earth is done.

Scott was "One of the good ones." He was truly special. He stood out--not because he was rich and famous but because he was humble and kind. You knew he loved his family even if you didn't know him that well because he always talked about them with so much love and pride. He was the person you looked forward to seeing...you would enjoy every minute when he walked into the show barn..he just made you feel better about life. He will be missed by so many that's a fact but my heart breaks for you Michele and Carson as I myself know the great loss of a husband and father. My husband passed away in Feb 2016 and my life was changed forever. Scott and my husband Al were so much alike and I think that's why I just enjoyed seeing Scott so much at the cattle shows. They both could do pretty much anything and they both loved their family's like no other. If there is anything I could ever do for either of you please do not ever hesitate to ask. The Hereford world will never be the same without Scott Barnes walking through that show barn.

How saddened and shocked I was to hear of the loss of Scott. Please know, Ellie, that you and your family, especially Larry, Michele and Carson and son and family from Montana are in my Heart and in my Prayers. I did not know Scott well, but knowing Ellie as I do as such a Loving and Kind friend and neighbor for several years, I know he has dwelled in a most Loving and Special Family while on this Earth and is cradled in the arms of Love in heaven. As I gaze at the beautiful marsh out in my back yard and the carefully pruned flowering shrubs planted by Ellie which Scott tended to yearly , I will forever smile with a Thank You in my Heart.
