David Wayland Obituary

David Jack Wayland, age 72, of Burnet, Texas, passed on to glory Monday, April 17, 2023, at home with his family by his side after a courageous three-year battle with colon cancer. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7.

David was born in Waco, Texas, to R. J. "Jack" and Corine Wayland. He graduated from Mart High School and attended East Central College in Ada, Oklahoma, where he played football.

While David Jack was a true athlete in football, baseball, track, barefoot water skiing and golf, he always said being Mart Panther #48 was the biggest sport honor that he carried in his heart always.

At age 12, he told his parents he was going to marry Judy Smith when he grew up, and so he did August 7, 1971 in Mart, Texas.

After retiring as a conductor-brakeman with Union Pacific Railroad, David and Judy moved to Delaware Springs in Burnet in 2000, where David enjoyed playing golf with his friends. He won numerous golf championships across Texas and made seven hole-in-ones before time ran out for him.

He was a very creative, talented man, excellent carpenter, and enjoyed making fishing lures. He played his guitar each evening and sang "witty" songs for his wife, Judy, and kept her laughing. So greatly missed he will be by her.

He was preceded in death by his parents R.J. "Jack" and Corine Wayland, sisters, Darladene Robinson and Judy Crain; and nephew, Michael Robinson.

David is survived by his wife of 51 years, Judy; brothers and sisters-in-law James and Debbie Smith of Burnet, Texas, Andrew and Barbara Smith of Rosebud, Texas, and Jimmie Dale Robinson of Mart, Texas; nieces Dawn Vogel and husband, Terry, of Mart, Texas, and Nicole Smith of Brooklyn, New York; nephews Jeb Smith and wife, Crystal, of Manvel, Texas, Brian Crain and wife, Carrie, of Seattle, Washington, Kevin Crain and wife, Dena, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and many cousins.

No formal service is planned at the request of David Jack. His ashes are to be buried next to his father and mother in the Mart Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in David Jack Wayland's name to First United Methodist Church, 701 East Texas Avenue, Mart, Texas 76664.
