Joseph Oshman Obituary

OSHMAN Dr. Joseph Oshman, born on June 20, 1920 in Galveston, Texas passed away on August 12, 2009.He graduated from Ball High School in Galveston, Texas and later attended Rice University in Houston. Initially he was employed in the merchandizing and retail business world until 1943 at which time he enrolled in the United States Navy V-12 program, entered the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, and graduated in 1946 with an M.D. degree. After a two-year stint of active duty as a Navy Medical Officer, he continued his postgraduate education at Johns Hopkins University in Pediatrics. Dr. Oshman opened his office for the practice of Pediatrics in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1952. He organized and founded The Children's Clinic where he continued his pediatric career, both in an active practice and in an administrative capacity, until the time of his untimely death. Other accomplishments have been his lead role in building the Pediatric Center; organizing the Coastal Bend Emergency Room Services Group for Driscoll Children's Hospital, and his advisory position in the Driscoll Children's Hospital Health Plan. He was one of the first medical staff members of the Humana Health Plan and served on its advisory committee during the early years of the beginning of the Humana HMO.In addition to his professional activity, Dr. Oshman has been actively involved in banking, real estate, and investments in Corpus Christi.He was preceded in death by his parents, by his brother, Dr. Peter Oshman of Port Lavaca, Texas and by his sister Rose Epstein of Victoria, Texas. He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Dolly Oshman; his sons, Dr. Robert Oshman (Kymberley), Dr. Steven Oshman (Dixie), and Scot Oshman (Deborah) all of Corpus Christi; his daughter Sandra Oshman-Riordon (Rick) of Port Aransas, Texas; and his grandchildren Kari Oshman, Brady Riordon (Jennifer), David Oshman, and Spencer Oshman.Professional memberships have included: the Nueces County Medical Society, the Texas Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the American Association of Pediatrics, and the American Board of Pediatrics. Other memberships have been the Corpus Christi Country Club, the Corpus Christi Town Club, the Corpus Christi Symphony Guild, and the Jewish Community Center. He is a member of the Congregation Beth Israel Synagogue.Dr. Oshman has always been proud of his Jewish heritage originating when his father, Ansel Oshman, immigrated from Russia to America through Galveston, Texas. Just as Dr. Oshman's parents instilled strong family values and work ethics into his life, so did Dr. Oshman with his family. Dr. Oshman will be sorely missed by the countless number of people whose lives he has touched.Funeral Services will be officiated by Rabbi Kenneth Roseman on Friday, August 14, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel, 4357 Ocean Drive, Corpus Christi, Texas.Interment will follow in the Jewish section of Seaside Memorial Park.Pallbearers will be Dr. Edgar Cortez, Dr. Ali Candas, Mr. Gary Pearce, Mr. Hal Katz, Dr. Harvey Dubiner, and Dr. Robert Ball.In keeping with the Jewish tradition, it is requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Oshman Family Endowment Fund of Congregation Beth Israel or to a charity of your choice.To view guestbook, share memories and leave condolences, please visit www.seasidefuneral.com
