Robert Fordtran Obituary

Dr. Robert Fordtran

By John Pettigrove, M. D.

Recently when Dr. Robert Fortran died at eighty-seven there was little mention of his life or contributions to the community in any local newspaper. For reasons I cannot explain it is not newspaper policy to honor such "ordinary citizens" regardless of their contributions. To be fair, Bob never sought to be a celebrity. He was a quiet principled man who was loved by everyone who knew him. He was an old school physician who served our community for over fifty years and he was unquestionably the most intelligent, devoted physician I have had the honor to work with.

He lived by those old school dictums--to be compassionate, be available, and always consider the patient's interest first--always. Bob never turned away any patient regardless of their ability to pay. His generation was trained and expected to live by those principles of compassion, availability, and putting the patient first. Today, while many have forgotten those old school expectations, Bob never forgot, and his life reflected it. As a principled, disciplined physician Bob gave immeasurable devotion to his patients and community. He served on the Memorial Medical Center board, worked tirelessly to develop the Memorial residency programs, was president of the Memorial medical staff, and president of the Nueces Medical Society. Through most of his professional life he maintained an active role in the leadership of the Texas Medical Association.

As a young man Bob was chosen as a fellow to the great cardiologist and developer of the pacemaker, Audrey Leatham in London. Bob had opportunities to practice and study across the US and Europe. He chose to stay here because South Texas was home. He loved Texas and was an avid UT football fan. He was proud to be a direct descendant of one of the first German immigrants to Texas. His ancestor, Paul Fortran, was a surveyor for Stephen F. Austin. Paul immigrated from Alsace-Lorraine in 1829. To me, Bob represented everything that is good and decent about Texas.

Bob contributed more to the advancement of medicine and health care in South Texas than any other single individual or institution. He worked relentlessly to develop the best of what we have. Alway a gentleman, he knew when things were not right and did his best, without giving a hint of offense, to help rectify any mistake or tragedy.

Bob's life was far from perfect. He was stalked by tragedy, but he endured and even accepted misfortune. His only enmity came from a stodgy old guard that resented his pursuit of change.

His friendships, family, and love of a doctor's life sustained him through the hard times.

As a physician who practiced by Bob's side for many years, I am proud of my association with him. He led by example and was never judgmental. We were a happy few who knew Bob and practiced with him. We became a band of brothers and sisters. We met in hallways and at the bedsides, often late in the night. Bob was almost always there. If he was not and you needed him, he would come right away. His love and passion for medicine infected us all. Now, except for a small handful, those of us that knew him best are gone.

In the end, Bob just got old. Some seem not to forgive him for that and refuse to honor him.

Perhaps this tribute will gentle their condition. For me, knowing his intellect and memory remained as sharp as ever made me sad and angry to see him so disrespected. A few of us begged him to retire, but he saw no other life. It was not in his nature to quit.

Thank God for Bob Fordtran. Those of you not there through those hard days past should hang your heads and hold your manhood cheap. Bob Fortran was a giant in a time when our country desperately needed heroes.

We loved Dr. Pettigrove's obituary! This is exactly the man we remember. My father, Dr HF Cable and mother Jolene (Cable) Wolter were introduced by Bob on their rides from south Texas to UTMB during nursing and medical school. He was always so giving and had a compassion to live.. to please... to heal. He fought to be of service til the end and upheld the Hippocratic Oath to the fullest! God bless our dear friend!

I'm a nurse and you wouldn't know he was old on the phone. Plus, you better know all your stuff about your patient before you called because he would ask. He had a sharp mind indeed. He was also polite, caring, and I'm happy I knew him. Thank you Dr. Fordtran!

Dr. Fordtran had the heart of a teacher. When I was taking a course on how to read 12 Lead EKGs, I used to save ones I had questions about to show him. He always took a few seconds to share what he knew. As a nurse with 35 years experience, I can tell you Dr. Fordtran's actions are rare and much valued.

My sympathies and prayers to Dr. Fordtran's family. I learned much from Dr. Fordtran during my administrative residency at MMC in 1976/1977 and during my service as Executive Assistant to President of MMC during which I worked with the Board of Managers including Doc Fordtran. I thank Dr. Pettigrove for preparing such a beautiful letter and Bob Fordtran story. Doc Fordtran was an amazing leader and caregiver at MMC and in Corpus Christi.

We need doctors like him and the rest of the medical staff at MMC during his lifetime TODAY.

I remember when I worked CCU at Memorial hospital Dr Fortran would come on the unit with his cowboy boots and his leather doctors bag and he always had a story. He would sat at his patient's bedside and talk with them as long as it took. He was never in a hurry. Missing his style today. What a wonderful Doctor and person . He will be greatly missed.

Dr. R. Fordtran Family & Friends & All Those He Touched.

Though I did not know him personally, I do know his name, " Dr. Fordtran." It is amazing how we come to know and respectfully and assurance of what a person is known for. The connection is instant. Dr. Fordtran was someone my mom spoke of. She was a nurses aide; she first a wife, mother and homemaker before coming her only out of home profession. I remember her telling me, " I make sure if Dr. Fordran comes in in the room (patients) I stand up. " He is so smart and we must do all he tells us to do. The patient will get better."
After reading the remembrance article from the medical group, I was also was touched, now, by Dr. R. Fordtran. Many are those who serve and are so missed only after they leave us. They are the true heroes of their service and profession making a quiet difference in the world. I hope we get to know others such as Dr. Fordtran; not after they leave us. Let us appreciate them right now. Thank you to those who wrote the remembrance for Dr. Fordtran. Well done.

Rest In Peace Dr. Fordtran.

So sorry to hear news of Dr. Fordtrans' passing. I have known him for about 55 years. He was my brothers heart doctor for 15 years before he passed away. My mother even worked for him for a short time in early 60's. Both my parents continued to have him as their primary doctor until they passed in 2010. I have memory as a child of him handing out lollipops after my exam and shots. I remember him walking down hospital corridors with a lite cigar. Can you believe it? Back in the day people smoked in the hospitals? It made the nurses so mad. He took such good care of my family. He would make house calls back in the day too. And I witnessed young doctors running to grab him and eagerly wanting to discuss issues of their own patients with him in the halls of hospital in 2010 when he was taking care of my mother's downfall. I will never forget him taking control of situation when my mother fell ill in 2008 and him knowing that she was my father's alzheimer's caregiver. He had to get my mother into hospital right away but I had dad with us in office. He took me to another room and got nurse and made calls right away to hospital and a nursing home. He arranged me to drop mom off at hospital and then deliver my dad to nursing home. It was a panicky situation but he was so calm and reassuring. And continued to be families keeper and doctor in different locations during those trying days and beyond until both parents passed away. My father loved him so much for all he did to help my very ill brother and they enjoyed passing jokes to each other on every visit to office. He will be missed in this town by so many.

Doc,
It is with a heavy heart I say goodbye. You were a great mentor. The passion you had for medicine never went unnoticed at the office. You always went the extra mile for your patients, especially for a very special Angel of mine. You will be missed by all, thank you for the countless memories, laughs, and keeping me updated on all Longhorns news! Heaven gained another Angel. To Caroline, Robert, and Charlie - with the surrounding love of family and friends, may you find strength during this difficult time. Your dad was loved by so many, I saw it each day at the office. May the Lord be with you all, you're in my prayers.
