Sterling Swinney Obituary

Sterling Price SwinneyCorpus Christi, Texas, TXSterling Price Swinney took his last voyage and was joined into the arms of the Supreme Commander on December 4, 2014. Sterling was born on March 14, 1927 to Hazel Fern Wilson and Merritt Sterling Swinney in Nebraska City, Nebraska. He graduated from Nebraska City High school in 1944, attended one semester of college at University of Nebraska in Lincoln; he then joined the Navy in 1946. He retired in 1967 as a Chief Personnel man and went to work in Civil Service in Personnel Management. He played football in high school and participated in baseball and basketball, and was always an avid sports fan. He took up golf after joining the Navy and that became his real hobby. He officiated football for high school and college while in Beeville, Texas and Meridian, Mississippi.While in the Navy he was awarded, National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), Republic of Viet-Nam Campaign Medal with Expeditionary Medal (2 awards) and several Navy Unit Commendations.He was preceded in death by his parents; step brother, Max Evans; brothers, Robert and Eldon Swinney; sister, Margie Lyons.He is survived by his wife, Polly Dye Swinney; sons, Michael Price Swinney (Nanci), Mark Steven Swinney, and Daniel Lee Swinney; step children, Patricia Ann Moore (Walter Moore, Jr.), Rhonda Kaye Klotz, Richard DuWayne Ratcliff and Donald Lyn Ratcliff (Sandra); 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Sterling will always be remembered for his devotion to GOD and Family, including his dogs and cat.Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on December 7, 2014 at Seaside Funeral Home. A farewell memorial service will be conducted by Members of Fleet Reserve Branch #94 at 7:30 PM, of which Sterling was a member. A funeral service will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on December 8, 2014 at Seaside Memorial Park and Funeral Home. Entombment to follow at Seaside Memorial Park.Pallbearers: Michael Swinney, Daniel Swinney, Mark Swinney, Sean Swinney, Gavin Swinney, Lance Swinney.In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to Covenant Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.
