Born in Jamestown on June 11, 1924 to Samuel and Esther Carlson Lundquist, Dan was a 1942 graduate of Jamestown High School, where he was class valedictorian and was active in school plays. He graduated from Union College, obtaining a degree in electrical engineering in three years as part of the Navy's V-12 program.
