As a youngster growing up on South Villa which was the main artery for schools buses discharging students at Bates HS.
Segregation was still flourishing and therefore aside my peers and me use the field to play base/soft ball and basketball. It was always a special treat for us when the Warriors and other teams would play and what an additional treat was to watch and listen as “Whattie” was the Empire!
I can hear now, as the pitcher was winding up, batter in position and Whattie crouch behind the catcher!
When the ball was released, Whattie would call out a command: “On the corner”. Indicating a strike! Those were some wonderful days!
May he Rest In Peace!
