John Hanlon Obituary

John Patrick Hanlon went by many names and wore many hats. Husband, Dad, Son, Brother, Uncle, Bud, Mookie, Daddy-O, and Schnookums – many called him their Best Friend. He was rarely seen without a cowboy hat, a Panama hat on vacation, or a Penn State or Minnesota Vikings ballcap. He was a most beloved and treasured human, who left us far too soon. John died suddenly and unexpectedly; his charm, chuckle, and charismatic presence will forever be missed. Many mourn for him, most especially his wife and bride, Kelly (Holmes) Hanlon, daughter, Briana Kristen, and son, Grant Patrick. John's thirty-one years of marriage to Kelly and seeing his children grow into incredible adults brought him great joy and pride. His family was everything to him and his greatest life accomplishment. John was born August 30, 1962 in Puerto Rico and spent his childhood in MD, NJ, and PA. He and Kelly made their homes in Columbia, Ellicott City, and Edgewater, MD. He graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and built a career in finance, providing over 30 years of dedicated service. Countless friends from Wissahickon High School, Penn State, Maryland and all over will remember John for his quick wit, humor, and kindness. He was always the one to get the dancing started, either at weddings, quiet nights at home, or Under the Stars at Annapolis' West Street with Kelly. He was the very definition of charming. John enjoyed paddling in his kayak, swimming, biking, running, watching football with his family, and grilling with music playing in the background. Memorable weekends found him singing at Kenny Chesney concerts, tossing the ball around with the kids, hiking, enjoying a fire in the backyard, going to Preakness or traveling to PSU and Vikings games as well as begrudgingly joining Kelly and the dogs at field events. John taught us that special moments are found in the everyday – with a perfectly timed joke, his genuine laugh, a reassuring fist bump, and his easy going nature. In addition to Kelly, Briana, and Grant, John is survived by parents Mark Z. and Mary (Ryan) Hanlon, father and mother-in-law Geoffrey and Patricia (Murphy) Holmes, sisters: Mary Karli (Denny) and Kathy Correia (John), brothers: Mark (Jane), Michael (Deb), Brian (Kerri), Kevin (Elizabeth), sister in love Stephanie, brother-in-law Christopher (Dawn) and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be held on July 7th at 10:30 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 109 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis. The family will be receiving visitors prior to the service from 9:00-10:00 am. John's legacy can be honored with donations to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention or the National Alliance on Mental Illness in John Patrick Hanlon's name.
