Deloris was born on April 26, 1927, in Chadron, NE, to Howard and Bertha (Brassfield) Lane. She was welcomed into the world by her big sister, Elizabeth and her half-brother, Daryl. At a young age, the Lane family moved to Pierre, where Howard worked for the Chicago Northern Railroad. They lived in a home on Pleasant Drive, directly across from the train depot. Deloris attended school in Pierre, and during high school, she experienced the challenges of many teachers leaving due to the war. Despite the changes, she enjoyed playing in the Riggs High Band and worked at the local movie theater.
After graduation, Deloris worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell, where she often worked the night shift. Deloris was also a dedicated and lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Pierre, where she served in numerous capacities for many years. It was at church that she met the love of her life, Gordon Baumgart. Also, there her sister, Elizabeth, met the love of her life, Gordon's brother, Wayne, and the two couples formed a unique bond, with both sisters marrying brothers. Deloris and Gordon were married on November 21, 1948.
Following their marriage, Deloris and Gordon moved to the Baumgart family farm, where Deloris became an integral part of farm life. She cooked for farm crews, coordinated the chicken operation, and moved countless vehicles to the fields. Their first son, Ronald Gordon Baumgart, was born on July 12, 1952, followed by a second son, Philip Allen Baumgart, who was welcomed and lost in 1954. On September 22, 1955, they welcomed their daughter, Connie Faye Baumgart. As a blessing of brothers marrying sisters, Deloris also gained two bonus daughters, Susan and Lois.
Family gatherings were a cornerstone of Deloris's life. Because of the special connection between the Lane and Baumgart families there were many cherished memories of Fourth of July celebrations with Deloris's famous fried chicken, fireworks, and watermelon. Christmas dinners were especially memorable, with matching homemade pajamas and Sooper Dooper Christmas trees.
Once her children were in school, Deloris began working as a cook for the lunch program at the Pierre High School, where she was beloved by students and staff alike. After her children grew older, Deloris worked part-time at JC Penney in the home furnishings department for 15 years. During this time, she and Gordon developed a real love for travel, visiting all 50 states, Canada, and Jamaica. They also spent many winters in Arizona. These experiences passed the love of traveling to their children.
In the 1980s, Deloris and Gordon moved from the farm to town, and Deloris became an active volunteer at the Hospice Thrift Store and The Discovery Center. She also spent countless hours at the YMCA, living by her motto: "Keep moving." Deloris had a gift for making friends wherever she went, and she maintained a positive attitude through both life's triumphs and challenges. Deloris and Gordon's hard work and dedication has left the legacy of a 100 year old farm. She was the family historian and the foundation of the Baumgart family, always cherishing the small moments that made life special.
