Jan Soth Obituary

Jan Ellen Bowden Soth, 46, of Aspers, Pa., formerly of Snow Hill, died Sunday, June 27, 2010, at home. Born April 9, 1964, in Salisbury, she was the daughter of the late James L. and Delores Dutterer Bowden. She was the wife of John Austin Soth. She was a 1982 graduate of Snow Hill High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society and a star basketball player, who with her teammates went to the Maryland State Girls Basketball finals four years in a row, winning the State Championship three times. She was a member of Bates Memorial United Methodist Church in Snow Hill and had recently been attending Wenksville United Methodist Church in Wenksville, Pa. She was a local business owner, with her parents and husband, who owned the Downtown Video Store in Snow Hill and the Pines Video Store in Ocean Pines. She was also the co-owner of the Judge's Bench restaurant in Snow Hill with her parents. She graduated from the University of Maryland, with a bachelor of arts degree in education and was an honor student there, and she received her master's degree in education from Western Maryland College, now McDaniel College. She was a teacher with the Carroll County Board of Education, where she taught human ecology classes at Liberty High School until 2000, at which time she became assistant principal at the newly opened Century High School. She had been employed at Century for 13 years until her health caused her to retire in 2008. She enjoyed being home with her family and their five dogs. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are son Michael D. Burke and fiance Anna Mackley, of Bel Air; a daughter, Jennifer Fallabel, of Dillsburg, Pa.; a grandson, Josh Fallabel, of Dillsburg; brother James L. Bowden II and sister-in-law Karen Bowden, of Princess Anne; brother Jeff Bowden and sister-in-law Tina Bowden, of Ocean City, Md.; nephews James L. III, Stephen, Zachary and Jacob Bowden; an aunt, Myrtle Pusey, of Snow Hill; an uncle, Tom Bowden, of Salisbury; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. A celebration of her life will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Bates Memorial United Methodist Church in Snow Hill. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Century High School PTA, 355 Ronsdale Road, Sykesville, MD 21784. Arrangements are by Short Funeral Home of Delmar in Delaware. I was a Substitute teacher, and my daughter attended Century high school. I really liked Mrs. Soth. I thought she was a wonderful educator! My daughter loved her as well. She will be greatly missed!!
