Ann Armstrong Obituary

Ann Armstrong

February 7, 2024

Charlotte, North Carolina - Ann Littlefield Armstrong died February 7th 2024 at Brookdale South Charlotte. She was born on February 25th 1935 in Rochester NY, the only daughter of Lawrence Torrey Littelfield and Ruth Harriman Littlefield. She graduated from Columbia School in Rochester NY and Smith College in Northampton Mass.

After graduation she worked for the Naval Operations Evaluation Group as an economist at the Pentagon, moving to Charlotte with her former husband Robert Bruce Pettyjohn in 1967. Ann remarried to Dr. Beverly Weller Armstrong until his death in 2009.

Ann worked as a realtor for many years but her true passion was in the garden and in the kitchen. As a Master Gardener Ann and Bev's gardens were featured in many magazines and on the Charlotte Spring Garden Tour. She was a longtime supporter of Winghaven in Charlotte where she was able to share her love of all things that grow. As an author she contributed a series of articles in the Charlotte Weekly and Co-authored a book about Elizbeth Lawrence's Garden, one of the co-founders of Winghaven. She also shared her love of gardening by teaching others through a series of lecture tours and seminars.

Ann is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Torrey Greene of Deep Gap NC and Robert Bruce Pettyjohn Jr of Merced California.

A celebration of life will be held 3:00 pm Friday February 16th 2024 at Christ Church on Providence Road in Charlotte, NC.

I shared gardens, garden trips and stories with Ann for many years, and loved every minute of her companionship. Visiting her and Bev in their Charlotte home, and having Ann and her friends with me in gardens around the world - well, how fortunate we all were. She shared her accomplishments (there were many), her stories (oh my!) and her humor (we laughed out loud) and we were all the better for having Ann in our lives. We all miss you. Allan

Torrey and Bruce: I am just now learning about your mother´s passing. Ann and I were neighbors in Villa 1 at The Sharon (new name). We shared a love of cooking and cookbooks. She was a force and she is and will be missed. Please know you have my heartfelt sympathy on your loss. May her memory be a comfort. Carole Bourret

I was so blessed to have my Mom, Ann Armstrong. Although growing up we often butted our heads in the long run she taught me unconditional love, strength, cooking, horticulture and love of books. A very accomplished woman who left beauty and sharing all her knowledge with people she met. Fly free Mom, all disease and pain is gone There is lots of love for you on this earth and in heaven where you will be with the loved ones that went before you, your daughter, Thank You, Torrey

Ann was a wonderful friend, garden mentor and inspiration. I will always remember the many wonderful dinners with her and Bev in their cozy home. We often toured the magnificent garden and admired Bev´s Bonsai specimens. Ann was a fabulous hostess whose dinners were always well planned and lovely. Over the years we traveled with Ann to many special gardens, and met many fellow gardeners. I had a lot of heartfelt conversations with Ann, as she was a good listener and often shared her own thoughts about the world and life. It is thanks to her that I began a long history with the historic Wing Haven garden, for wish I will always be grateful. We used to call her The Queen, because we felt she was the queen of all garden knowledge. I think that tickled her. Ann, you will be missed as one of my dearest friends but always remembered... Thank you for having been a part of our lives. Bob

I worked with Ann in real estate, volunteered with her at Winghaven. She was
smart, pretty, funny and resilient. Her company was welcomed in any gathering. She was talented and fun to be with.
