Hazel Hastings Obituary

Hazel Elizabeth Garner Hastings "Polly"
February 3, 1934 - December 15, 2020
Mint Hill, North Carolina - Polly passed peacefully on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 after a brief and intense battle with COVID. She joins her husband of over 50 years, Bobby, and her many friends and family members in her final resting place. Born in Weldon, NC, Polly grew up on a farm where her family raised cotton and peanuts. She graduated from East Carolina University and taught junior high school for over 30 years, the majority at Albemarle Road Jr High. She loved basketball and enjoyed gardening, going to the mountains and cooking – her family especially loved her homemade cheese straws and Chex mix!
Polly was an active member of Midwood Baptist Church for over 50 years. In her later years, she enjoyed Hallmark movies, cheering on the Tarheels and sitting on her porch in the sunshine, talking with the neighbors.
She is survived by daughter Karen Norman (Rick) of Charlotte, son Larry Hastings (Linda) of Weddington and granddaughters Katie Baker (Patrick), Hunter Lloyd (Cameron), and Hannah Robinson (Jared); sister Margie Nethercutt (Pete), brothers Wilbur Garner and Jimmy Garner (Peggy). She is preceded in death by her brother Clifton (Doodie) Garner, and parents Dick and Burla Garner.
She is also survived by Jennifer Hodges (Brandon) and family Kayla, Jayce, Aubry and Gryffin, Kim Norman and family Kyra and Steeley, Cynthia Pfaff(Thomas) and family Phoenix and Pressley, Carrie Staley (Josh) and family Jaclyn and Jacob.
A special thanks to Judy and her friends who helped care for her these last few months.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Midwood Baptist Church, 2029 Mecklenburg Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28205. A small graveside service for friends and family will be held Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at 1:00 pm at Sunset Memory Gardens, 8901 Lawyers Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227. Please
practice social distancing.

So very sad to hear of Polly’s passing. She always had an open door and an open heart. Paul and I were blessed to have Bobby and Polly as neighbors for 10 years. Many fond memories. Prayers for her family.
