James Brandon Obituary

James Willie Brandon, Sr., 82, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2025, following a two-year battle with dementia and a sudden illness.

Born in Davidson, NC, he was the son of Aline Lipsey Brandon and J.V. Brandon. A proud graduate of Torrence Lytle High School and Johnson C. Smith University, James excelled in both academics and athletics. He met his wife of 59 years, Margaret Love Brandon, while at JCSU, and together they raised two children.

James dedicated his life to education, beginning his teaching and coaching career in Chester, SC. He later served in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System, earning two master's degrees and rising to Principal at Glenn and Parkland High Schools, where he was named Principal of the Year. He was a longtime member and past president of the Forsyth County chapter of the National Education Association.

A faithful member of United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, James served as a Deacon and community leader. He also remained deeply involved with JCSU, the CIAA tournament, bowling, and the Shepherd's Center.

He is preceded in death by his wife Margaret, his brother Theodore Brandon, and brother-in-law Felmington Haywood Love, Jr. He is survived by his children, Rochelle Monique Brandon and James Brandon, Jr. (Iris); granddaughter, Zora Wynn Brandon; siblings, Josephine McKissick (The late Rev. Warren McKissick), Ruby Evans (Eddie), Bessie Grissom Joyner, and Bobbie Brandon (Mary); sister-in-law, Vivian Love Turner (William); and many nieces, nephews, cousins, former students, and friends.

James lived a life of purpose, faith, and service. He leaves behind a legacy of leadership, love, and quiet strength.

Yesterday

I worked for Mr Brandon through his entire tenure at Parkland High School. He will always be one of my favorite principals. He was kind, compassionate, firm, supportive, and wise. He greeted each and every teacher each and every morning as we came in. I loved him dearly and he will surely be missed by all blessed to know him.
