Janine Sutphen Obituary

Janine S. Sutphen, 57, of Durham, NC, formerly of Charlotte, NC, passed away in January, 2003. Janine was born November 10, 1945 in NY and grew up in Queens. She has also lived in California, Ohio, Vermont, and North Carolina. She met Chazz Sutphen in San Francisco and they married in 1976. In Vermont they raised 3 boys, and ran a commercial photography studio. Later they moved to Charlotte, NC, where Chazz died in 1995 of heart disease. In 1998, Janine moved to Durham, NC to be closer to friends. In June 2001, she married Rob Petrick.
A long-time Unitarian Universalist, Janine enthusiastically participated in the annual Southern UU Summer Institute in Charlottesville, VA. She was most recently a member of the Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Durham. Her careers included science teacher, programmer, writer and indexer. An active and enthusiastic member of the Durham Symphony, she played cello and maintained the symphony web site.
Janine led a joyful and creative life. She sewed, quilted, knitted, wove and gardened, played cello and Celtic harp, and shared everything with her friends and loved ones. She was also extremely generous with her humor and encouragement, and often challenged and inspired people to take life-changing actions. She met any challenge with determination and perseverance, including raising her sons alone. She was outspoken, strong and an independent 5'2 of integrity. She was always ready to make you laugh with her humorous wisecracks and big smile. She would do anything for her friends, and we would do anything for her. How we miss you, Janine!
Janine Sutphen is survived by her three sons, Christopher, Robin and Darren Sutphen, and hundreds of friends who love her and miss her.
Memorial service will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Unitarian Universalist Church of Charlotte, 234 North Sharon Amity Road, Charlotte, NC. A Celebration of Life Service will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 8, at the Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 4907 Garrett Road, Durham, NC. Both services open to the public.
In honor of Janine's love for fresh flowers, you are invited to bring a spray of flowers to the Sunday celebration.
