My deepest sympathies go out to Mrs. Dot Helms and to the family of the Honorable Jesse Helms. I have admired Mr. Helms from the times I listen to him on WRAL-TV as a child. As I watched the memorial service via WRAL online on Tuesday my view and opinion of the Honorable Senator from North Carolina was further validated that this Christian Gentleman loved his family, his country, and the Lord and only sought to serve Him as best he could. May the blessings of our Lord comfort and keep you all.

Senator Jesse Helms was a bulwark statesman who upheld our constitution with an ethical resolve, even when faced with strong opposition, and we think this is why he was repeatedly elected to represent North Carolina in Congress. We so appreciated these traits of his and the many years that he dedicated to public service. We would like to express our appreciation to his family, too, because holding a political office often infringes on family privacy more so that other occupations do.
Helms family, we extend our sympathy to you as you adjust to life without your loved one.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Helms family at this difficult time. We as a nation have lost a great man. It is fitting that he went to be with the Lord on July 4 as did two other great statesmen - Thomas Jefferson and John Adams.
This nation is all the better for the ideals that Jesse fought so strongly for. I recall the speech given before the UN in New York some years ago that was so passionate and appropriate. He was a man who lived the "to thine own self be true" philosophy. This country is all the better because of him. He will be sorely missed.

My sincerest sympathy goes out to the Honorable Jesse Helms family. I didn't know him and didn't ever have the chance to meet him but truly admired him for his way of thinking. He really was for the people back home and not trying to make a name for himself. But he made a great name for himself because of his way of thinking. I just wish we had more politicians like him. If we ever needed them, 'tis now.

To the families of Senator Jesse Helms:
Although I never had the pleasure to personally meet the Honorable Jesse Helms, nevertheless, I feel that his passing is a loss to everyone, whether they personally knew him or not.
Listening to the eulogies spoken in his memory, I feel a great loss in not having known him.
He was wise, caring, considerate, and your loss is a loss that we also share with you.
I wish our state of Nebraska would have had the pleasure of Senator Helms within our realm.
There is no doubt that the Honorable Jesse Helms is now assisting in Heaven, because his personal talent would never be wasted.
May his memory help ease your pain, and yet, continue to give each of you the love he kept within his heart.
God Bless.

My Daddy loved to tell the story of how he and Mr. Helms hid behind bushes at the driver's license division to watch their daughter's driving with the license examiner. Daddy had taken my sister, Maxine, to get her license and Mr. Helms had taken his daughter to get her license. They hid behind the bushes to watch, so as not to make the daughters nervous. I am not sure what daughter it was, but my sister would be 62. (She passed away in 2006.) We also had to be extremely quiet when "viewpoint" was on so Daddy would not miss a word.
I do not know if you have ever heard that story, but thought if not you would enjoy it now. So sorry for your loss.

Senator Helms was a great American statesman. I corresponded with Senator Helms, through his senate years, on a number of matters of concern to me and he always responded promptly by letter to my letters. I remember my best friend married a Korean girl when he was working and traveling overseas back in the 80's. On his return to the states, my friend was having problems getting his wife citizenship to this country. I remember my good friend always told me how much Senator Helms personally helped him get citizenship for his new Korean wife and how he treated both of them so graciously and with true respect on their visit to Washington, D.C. I don't think you get that from most public leaders. I think Senator Helms was on the right side of most issues and he mirrored most North Carolinians' views. I don't think we will see another leader like Senator Helms and this is sad. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his wife,
Dot, and the rest of his family.

My deepest sympathies go out to Mrs. Dot Helms and to the family of the Honorable Jesse Helms. I have admired Mr. Helms from the times I listen to him on WRAL-TV as a child. He was the only public servant that I ever had the opportunity of visiting with in Washington. On each occasions Senator Helms and his staff treated me with the utmost hospitality and respect. My family has a fond memory of Senator Helms greeting us and escorting us to the Senate gallery. I called upon him on numerous occasions for assistance and Senator Helms always responded going the extra mile to help when it seemed no one else in the government had the time.

I wish to express my condolences to the family on the loss of Senator Helms. I was privileged to be able to meet him and spend some time in conversation with him in June of 2000. Even though I differed on many of his political views, once I met him as a person, I was very impressed with his humor, sincerity and huge heart.
We entered his office, I introduced myself and stated, that we were related, distant cousins on my mother's side, Betty Helms Hager. He chuckled and said, I am related to a lot of people, but most of them won't admit it. Then he met my son who was wearing an Old Navy t-shirt. Senator Helms, said, Oh, I'm Old Navy, referring to his Naval Service.
My husband, son and I sat in his office with others while he shared of relationships he developed in the war and the long term relationships he had with people. During the visit, he offered for my son to call someone. He chose to call his Grandfather, Pat Hager, who was also in the Navy. Senator Helms greeted him on the phone.
I was most impressed with Senator Helms after spending the time with him. He was a man who made difficult challenging decisions. But he always made them based on what he believed to be the right thing to do. He was a man with heart. I am honored to have been able to meet him. God Bless.

Senator Helms and my father, Howard Ford had rooms next to each other at Mayview Convalescent Center for several months until my father's death in July - two years ago. I had several opportunities to speak with Senator Helms when I would visit my daddy. Even though, Senator Helms's memory was fading at that time, each conversation was delightful. Of course there were many things that he could not remember, but he would tell me about his work with the television station and about growing up in a small southern town. I will always treasure those times which I had with him and was very sad to learn of his death. He called me Miss Virginia when I would see him, either in his room or out in the TV area. Mrs. Helms and my mom had several opportunities to talk when my mom would visit Daddy. Senator Helms and my father were dealing with some of the same health issues so I'm sure the two of them had something in common. I will be thinking of the whole family during these difficult times. Our country has lost a great man, but you have lost your husband, father, and grandfather. Please know that my prayers are with you.

Jesse Helms gave me my "start" when, as a young man, I came, unannounced and unknown, to Raleigh, to deliver a speech. He immediately put me on WRAL-TV, even though all he knew about me was that I was a Vietnam-veteran, who was speaking against Communism. We corresponded, over the years, and I treasure the memories of a true patriot, segregationist and statesman, Jesse Helms.

Senator Helms and I shared some memorable times back in the 70's. Several times I had the honor to sit next to him at political events. He always encouraged me to be politically active and his homespun approach always made me feel so comfortable talking with him. In the past few months I have had the pleasure of talking with Mrs. Helms. She always spoke so proudly of Senator Helms and it always amazed me when she would share her political opinions. I will always remember the time that I met Senator Jesse Helms. I went to A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis. It was customary for the Junior Class to go to Washington DC every year to learn about the history of this great nation. There was a group of about 8 of us, who after looking down on the Senate at work, struck out on our own. We were told that if we would like to return, we would need a special Senate pass. Well, this required riding the subway, that is all we wanted to do, after all, who wanted to look down from the galleys above at a bunch of old men working. It was our lucky day. We were in the basement of the capitol, I think, when someone dared me to go up and tap Senator Helms on the shoulder and tell him we were from North Carolina. I am so glad I took the dare. He was genuinely glad to see us. He told us to follow him and he took us downstairs to the doors where the Senators went in to work. He said now, ya'll wait right here. The next thing you know, he comes out with John Glenn and Ted Kennedy. We were just so humbled to be able to meet Senator Helms, Kennedy and oh my gosh, John Glenn, the first astronaut to orbit the earth from space. Senator Helms knew he was bringing history through the door to meet us. I will never ever forget that moment. If only we had gotten their autographs. Our teachers did not believe us at first, then it dawned on them that we were not kidding!! This was in 1976 the Bicentennial Year. Now I do have a Senate Pass signed by Senator Helms that I have always treasured. So I met a great man. A man of history and true convictions, a man who cared enough about a group of kids to stop and do something wonderful for us. By the way, my people are Helms too, from Monroe and I was always told that in the Helms family we were related. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends who loved and respected Senator Helms so much. I wish I could go back and relive that moment in time. God Bless.

A true statesman. Jessie always had time to talk to the people he represented and I know of no time he comprimised himself or his ideals for his own gain. He took the time to call me on a Saturday morning to answer a question I had. We talked as if we were old friends and he had all the time in the world to talk with me. We talked for at least 30 minutes. It was one of the greatest privilages I have ever had to have known such a man as he.

A Man for all Seasons with consistency of views. No ambiguity on principles. He did not practice "flip-flopping" but was true to his Word!! An example missing today in Wash, DC largely. He made a difference "pro or con" and for the betterment of good government.
He was not an "absentee Senator", but did his job for which the people elected him.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.
But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Senator Helms has entered into the presence of God in heaven and has heard Jesus say "well done my good and faithful servant". I pray God will raise up more men like Sen Helms to lead our country. I had the honor and privilege of meeting Senator Helms at Mayview once and I consider it one of the highlites of my life. Thank you for your service to NC and our country. We will miss you.

I am orginally from N.C. and voted for him every time. A wonderful, God-fearing man who really cared about what he was doing. Rest in Peace Jesse. Whether you know it or not, you did good!

An honored salute to a true American Patriot - A man who was not so concerned with his popularity, or his political future, as he was truth and justice! He will not only be remembered, but respected and admired! Who could ask for a greater tribute or legacy than that? God Bless the family and friends of this fine man in your hour of grief...God Bless America!

How wonderfully we as a nation and a state were blessed by Jesse's long and dutiful services. May God see fit to raise up others to follow in the same paths. Sympathy to the family . Arlene M. Hole N C.

Jesse Helms was one of the few constants in my life, a much-needed positive male role model in a family torn by divorce, when I was a child. When it seemed the most important people in my life would let me down, I could count on the strength and courage of three good men - my granddaddy, Ronald Reagan, and Jesse Helms. I envision them all in heaven now having the best of times. Until I see them again, I hope to make them proud by striving to be as kind, brave, and strong as they all were.
Out of all of my heroes, Jesse Helms taught me the importance of taking a stand for what one believes is right, and not betraying one's value system, regardless whether it be the lonely road less travelled by popular sentiment.
Thank you for being a personal inspiration, a guardian of our State's interests, as well as a guardian of the interests of all people who love liberty.
Love and Prayers,
Monica Langdon Jackson

We would like to thank the Helms family for sharing their daddy and husband with us for all these years. I am sure there were times when he would have loved to be at home with his family, but he was off fighting for what he felt was right for our country...again we thank you for all that you gave up! I wish we had more men who would fight for what is right as he did....May he REST IN PEACE.

People may not remember what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel. RIP.
