Joseph Durham Obituary

Joseph McLure Durham SURFSIDE BEACH - Joseph McLure Durham, age 85, of 8th Avenue North, died Monday, June 18, 2012 at his home. Born August 25, 1926 in Chester, SC, he was the son of the late Maud Reynolds and Charlie Ross Durham. He attended Edwards Military Institute in Salemburg, NC and the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. Mr. Durham served for six years in the U.S. Air Force in the North Pacific before entering the banking profession. He was formerly assistant vice president of First Union National Bank in Charlotte for 8 years and prior to that he was assistant cashier for 12 years with City National Bank of Charlotte. He retired from Santee Cooper Electric Company with 20 years employment as an office supervisor in Conway. Mr. Durham was a member of the American Legion, the Forty and Eight and Trinity Presbyterian Church of Surfside Beach. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Alice Young Durham; his youngest daughter, Nancy Burnet and his oldest daughter, Janice Harris. Survivors include his middle daughter, Patricia D. Alexander and her husband John Allen Alexander of Salisbury, NC; a granddaughter, Amy Elizabeth Creek of Jefferson, GA and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jacob and Chance. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, June 22, 2912, at Elmwood Cemetery in Charlotte, NC with Barry W. Lambert officiating. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, June 25, 2012, at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Joe's passing represents the loss of a long time and dear friend. We have fond memories of him and his family. We say 'Adieu' to our 'senior statesman'. Our condolences to Tricia and family.

Joe was a kindly, gracious, wonderful person who never let age interfere with what he wanted to do. There were family tragedies in his life, but he refused to be beaten down. We had many memorable fishing adventures together. We will miss him greatly.
