Julia Austen Obituary

Julia Townsend Austen, longtime Charlotte resident and beloved daughter of Langhorne Watts of Lynchburg, Virginia passed away on July 7th after a years long battle with pulmonary disease.

Julia spent her childhood and early adult life in Boston, Massachusetts. In midlife she moved to Charlotte, North Carolina and established a new life as a professional caregiver. She was perfect for the job, with her warm personality and her instincts for making a person feel comfortable, both physically and emotionally, above all with her infectious laugh that caused everyone to laugh right along with her. She was beloved by all who knew her in Charlotte, from the staff at the cardiac rehab program at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center's Wellness Center to her local librarian at the Myers Park Library branch where Julia, a voracious reader, would appear every Friday to return one stack of books and take out a new one. She was a courageous and extremely caring person throughout her life.

Julia is survived by her loving brother, George Austen of Vail, Colorado, who as a child gave Julia her delightful nickname "Dudabug", and by numerous nephews and cousins. Her sister, Sally Austen Adams, predeceased her.

Julia's family is deeply indebted to her devoted group of friends and neighbors in Charlotte who kept an eye out for her as she progressed into her mid 80's, and who were always there offering help and companionship in myriad ways. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed.

While Julia did not want any formal memorial, please consider a gift to the Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center Foundation Rivas Scholarship Fund in her name.
